Ready to go 'Into the Woods'
In this Stephen Sondheim musical, anything can happen when you go ""Into the Woods,"" the closing production of the season for University Theatre. It introduces the audience to their favorite fairy-tale characters in a way they have never seen them before. Show-goers follow Little Red Riding Hood to her granny's house, meet an ugly old witch and some handsome princes, see if Cinderella ever makes it to the festival and much more. It's the stories and characters we all know and love in situations we never could have predicted. Who knew princesses could be so clumsy, old men so mysterious and that trees could sing so well?
Costa's films worth the difficult watch
The worst that one can say about the 2010 Wisconsin Film Festival is that it nearly overshadowed what was arguably the year's most important DVD release: ""Letters from Fontainhas: Three Films by Pedro Costa,"" released by the Criterion Collection March 30. The trio of movies—none of which has received U.S. distribution beyond short runs in major city art houses—contained in this four-disc box set are three of the most aesthetically significant works of film art produced in the last two decades. For anybody who gives half a damn about cinema as an art rather than as an immersive distraction, laying eyes on all three is absolutely essential.

Honorable Mention - Justin Timberlake
Someone had to make pop music suck less. That someone was Justin Timberlake. Though he first emerged with 'N Sync in the middle of American music's darkest hour, the kid grew up, and so did his music. Debuting his first single, ""Like I Love You,"" at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, a grimmer future seemed to be on the horizon. Donning a hat and gloves, delivering a deathly serious performance full of dance breaks and falsettos, his solo career seemed doomed to be more of the same old crap—a dime-store Michael Jackson for teeny boppers. But Timberlake hit his stride quickly. He honed his vocal skills. He forged relationships with strong producers. While the Neptunes produced that disappointing first single, they also produced ""Rock Your Body,"" one of the best pure pop songs of the decade. Working with Timbaland led to two of the best scorned lover songs of recent years in ""Cry Me a River"" and ""What Goes Around ... / ... Comes Around."" He also developed a great public sense of humor about himself. In an era of humorless A-Listers like Kanye and Bono, Timberlake instead became the only must-see ""Saturday Night Live"" host of his generation. It's easier to get away with saying you're bringing sexy back if you're willing to follow it up with ""Dick in a Box."" It has allowed him to become his own persona and make a cultural imprint beyond his music (well, that and showing us half of Janet Jackson's rack).
Honorable Mention - The Notwist
There is something to be said about slow and steady. The Notwist will no doubt have a poor showing in any artist of the decade lists, but they still deserve recognition for being a pinnacle of steadfast quality and craftsmanship in music. The six year gap in between their first release, Neon Golden, and the experimentally orchestrated The Devil, You + Me only serves to underscore the quiet mystique around the band. Before the recording of the elegiac and pensive Neon Golden, the Notwist found footing in myriad genres, each one providing a new perspective that found its way into this decade.
