Last week, three female students were sexually assaulted in
Madison. Last Sunday at the Super Bowl in a choreographed dance
move, Justin Timberlake ripped off part of Janet Jackson's shirt,
exposing her breast. In the United States, about one-third of
American women report being physically or sexually abused by a
husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.

Each year, UHS offers end-of-the-semester stress-busting tips.
They are things like \eat breakfast before morning exams"" and
""take regular stretch breaks during long periods of studying.""
These suggestions may help you deal with the pressure of finals,
but frankly, they're not going to make you feel any better. I
suggest the following:

In \Beyond Borders"" Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen unite to
bring stubborn and complementary characters together across
national and class boundaries. The leads make the movie a strangely
stirring and eye-opening journey through the harsh realities of
humanitarian work.

The student sections at Saturday's football game were surprised
when the song \Jump Around,"" by House of Pain, was not played.
Many sat in protest of the song's elimination and yelled
obscenities at the sound technician.

Cheers, whistles, a trumpet and bongo drums marked the end of a
day of silence for a group of about 200 ralliers at the Capitol
Wednesday. The nationwide Day of Silence, sponsored by the Gay,
Lesbian and Straight Education Network, emphasized the silenced
voices of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender individuals,

While the Student Judiciary failed to rule on the legality of
the seg-fee opt-out petition by press time, it is likely that
students will have the opportunity to vote on the new method of
fund distribution this week. The proposed \opt-out"" system would
allow individuals to choose not to fund certain student
organizations, the only caveat being that a student cannot
participate in a group he or she has not funded. The opt-out system
has been touted as a way to get students more involved by giving
them a larger degree of control over funding of certain groups, and
even as a way to cut down on the fiscal absurdities and
inefficiencies we have all grown to know and associate with
Associated Students of Madison.

Fame has always been a confusing concept to me: ordinary people
become known across the world by millions, making them
extraordinary. It's not that they're so much better looking than
the rest of us, or that they're so much more talented. Somewhere
along the line, however they received the gift of fame, causing
others to become obsessed with them for no good reason.

On its latest release, Inatty in Jah Music, Madison's most
popular reggae band explores broad-ranging themes both lyrically
and musically. A diverse representation of the reggae genre, it
gives nods to older styles such as roots-rock and dub. The Daily
Cardinal recently spoke with Demetrius Wainwright, bassist and lead
singer of Natty Nation.

In order to understand the current commercial music climate we
should first look back to the early '90s, and in particular the
beginning of alternative music's commercial reign. The beginnings
of alternative music can be traced back to a number of factors, the
most important of them being the release of Nirvana's Nevermind and
the subsequent popularity of grunge music. Business-savvy record
labels saw the opportunity to use grunge's popularity as a catalyst
to introduce audiences to other forms of guitar-based rock, most of
which are very different from grunge, but all of which became
classified under the broad category of alternative rock. Although
it thrived for a few years on the radio and in CD sales,
alternative ultimately proved to lack longevity, and by the late
'90s, the same dance pop that dominated the charts before Nirvana
was again the norm.

As befitting a progressive mid-size college town, Madison has a
number of unique and appealing music venues only a hop, skip or a
$7 cab ride away from the campus area. These span the gap from
university cafeterias (Club 770) to wine bars (Cafe Montmartre),
and the music represented is just as varied. In that spirit, here
is an overview of the some of the best clubs around town.
