Police link death of 31-year-old man to campus area bars, Bologna Bash

A man who died after falling down the stairs of a campus apartment a week and a half ago had been drinking at Butch's Bologna Bash, WKOW-TV reported Tuesday.

John Hanson, 31, of Cross Plains, Wis., drank approximately five to 10 beers at the Stadium Bar, 1419 Monroe St., and Jordan's Big Ten Pub, 1330 Regent St., his girlfriend told the Madison Police Department.

He then went to Butch's Bologna Bash, an annual fund-raiser for the Athletics Department held at the UW Fieldhouse, where he had about three or four more beers and two vodka and lemonades, she said.

At around 9 p.m. that night Hanson struck his head on a fixed object after falling down several stairs at an area apartment.

The death certificate cited alcohol use as a contributor to his death, but the extent of alcohol as a contributor has not been determined.

\It's still an accidental death, no matter what happened,"" Madison Police Department Public Information Officer Larry Kamholz told WKOW-TV.

Hanson also attended Butch's Bologna Bash last year.

The event, organized for more than 30 years by former UW basketball player Butch Strickler, concluded its run this year. In recent years it drew more than 6,000 people annually.
