Despite his speculation that the American public has long since
forgotten the 2000 presidential election voting controversy, David
Zarefsky, a Northwestern University professor and author, spoke on
the legal implications of the election Thursday in Vilas
Hall.

I do not contend with Sanna Ansari's point published on Oct. 21,
that the United States should help the Palestinians (Palestinians
need American support, too). As a moderator of the conflict, it is
the United States' responsibility to act fairly and in harmony with
both Israel and the Palestinians.

\Sweatshop labor"" is no longer an unfamiliar phrase for many
college students. The efforts of many organizations in the 1990s
brought to the world's attention the dreadful conditions faced by
the workers producing items we consume everyday.

Dan Hinkel?s opinion of the Great Midwestern Marijuana Harvest
Festival [10/9/03] only disturbed me slightly?even though his
article was a mean attack on a bunch of hard-working organizers.
His negative attitude toward the movement is derogatory to the
efforts of half a century?s worth of work to re-legalize marijuana;
if not totally, at least for medicinal purposes.

Brant Thundercloud, a UW-Madison freshman accused of stabbing a
fellow student in Sellery Hall Sept. 13, could receive two years of
probation and have his record expunged under a plea agreement, the
district attorney's office offered Wednesday.

Oswaldo Paya's house in Havana is fairly easy to identify. Just
look for the not-so-secret secret police keep the house under
24-hour surveillance; they will be located on park benches and in
parked cars. The house is also monitored by video cameras, the
phones are tapped and all mail is opened. The Cuban government is
clearly afraid of this Catholic human-rights activist.

With the busy schedule most college students have, it is no
wonder that several convenience stores have sprung up around
campus, with most of the stores concentrated around State
Street.

American democracy, as first conceived, was a new way of running
government.?? As opposed to a parliamentary chamber, we proved that
powers could be separated among branches and not just work, but
work well.

It is hard to comprehend what it is about our president that
continues to convince the majority of Americans that he is doing
well as our leader. The latest Gallup Poll boasts a 52 percent
approval rating for Bush, which is a far cry from where it has
been, but still very solid. There does not seem to be much logical
reasoning to believe Bush is doing well, which makes his high
rating seem so ridiculous.

Neither an injured wrist nor a late Blue Devil run could prevent
the Wisconsin Badgers (6-2) from sweeping the two-game weekend
series last weekend against the North Carolina State Wolfpack (5-5)
and the Duke Blue Devils (4-5) at the Inntowner Invitational in
Madison.

David Spade is a weird entertainer to analyze. He was funny on
\Saturday Night Live"" but outstayed his welcome. ""Just Shoot Me""
was funny, then badly outstayed its welcome. The movies he made
with Chris Farley were funny, but now with Farley and ""Just Shoot
Me"" gone, it's time to see what Spade will make of himself. With
""Joe Dirt"" and now with ""Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star,""
the early results are middling at best.

It is still the first week of classes and already stress is
causing headaches and sleep deprivation. Maybe the recent expense
of books has put an untimely dam on the cash flow or the pressure
of getting into classes that actually fill a requirement has lead
to a condemnation of all things educational. Looking for some
relaxation? The Tunes at Monona Terrace Concert Series offers a
chance to take a breather from high stress classes, enjoy a wide
variety of music from local artists, and best of all, it is totally
free.

As fall dawns upon Madison, Wisconsin for another year, the
usual questions arise from freshmen once again. Where are my
classes? How do I purchase a novelty ID to be used for strictly
novelty purposes? Will that girl be impressed by my Todd Oldham
collection of star pillows and new pastel lamps from Target?

Many of last year's stars in college football have moved on to
the professional ranks, leaving their former teams with seemingly
gaping holes; their successors though, have thus far proved to be
fairly capable of filling the openings.

If Saturday's football game against West Virginia had ended
after 1:16 into the first quarter, there would not be any doubts
regarding this season. No one would have questioned how senior
quarterback Jim Sorgi will fare this season after playing backup to
Brooks Bollinger. No one would worry about pass protection or the
strength of this year's defensive line. But, unfortunately, the
game did last more than 1:16 and many of these questions remain
even after a 24-17 Wisconsin win over the Mountaineers.

With the clear, calm voice of a female troubadour and a knack
for nailing lucid images to tender melodies, Dar Williams has
established herself as a rising folk singer, comparable to a
latter-day Joan Baez. Her recent release, The Beauty of the Rain,
is a distillation of pastoral imagery delivered in a refreshing,
serene manner. The Daily Cardinal recently spoke with Dar
Williams.

As the fighting in Iraq subsides, approximately 50 Wisconsin
Army National Guard units stationed at Fort McCoy continue to wait
for their deployment to the Middle East.
