As the Black Keys recently discovered, people sometimes take
good things for granted. After making four albums of garage/blues
rock that are probably unmatched by any of their peers, the
attention span of many listeners wore thin. The fact that the Black
Keys did nothing but rock at a high level had actually become a
complaint against them. They had set the bar so high for themselves
there seemed almost no room left for improvement. Luckily, this
band cannot be stopped.

It wasn't that long ago that the release of a new Nine Inch
Nails album would precede a five-or six-year drought for new
material, much to the dismay of the insatiable NIN fan base.
Luckily, those days of substance dependency and writer's block
plaguing the artistic efficiency of mastermind Trent Reznor are
long gone. On Fe. 16, roughly 10 months after releasing the dynamic
_Year Zero_, a news update on _nin.com_ displayed the words 2
weeks."" Fast forward to the evening of March 2 and, apparently not
content with watching his fan base writhing in unbearable
anticipation for only two weeks, Reznor posted a final update: ""2
hours."" After watching his fans impatiently squirm for a couple
more hours, Trent finally filled everyone in.

Creating the musical embodiment of ruthless, continental
conquest is a goal too lofty for most, but Genghis Tron's brand of
caustic, electronic metal is an enormity of imperial proportions.

You might not expect the city that molded a hardcore culture
responsible for acts like Fugazi, Bad Brains, Pagenintynine and
Darkest Hour to be well-represented in a genre as mild as
psychedelic rock, but Washington, D.C. natives Dead Meadow are one
of the top bands in the field.

Gov. Jim Doyle warned Wisconsin residents that challenging days
are ahead"" in his annual State of the State address held at the
State Capitol Wednesday. These challenging days are in reference to
the national state of economic crisis. After a year in which state
legislature struggled to pass an acceptable state budget four
months past it's deadline, Doyle focused heavily on affirming
recent accomplishments and major goals in contributing to the
overall growth and survival of Wisconsin in a ""very difficult
fiscal situation.""

The appeal of the absurdly chaotic and abrasive nature of The
Dillinger Escape Plan might not be easily grasped by the musically
squeamish, but the acclaimed band's tremendous following in the
underground metal scene speaks for itself. With the release of
Calculating Infinity (1999), DEP set the standard for technical
hardcore/metal music and immediately solidified their status as
titans of experimental and aggressive music.

Certain people have a way with words that can't be taught or
imitated, an ability to teach lessons and illustrate higher truths
in an eloquent fashion while remaining relatable to all who listen.
Most of accessible hip-hop does not feature people like this. Saul
Williams is an exception, and The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of
Niggy Tardust! is a great example of why he's in the top tier of
hip-hop artists.

Two radically different icons of rock music, both unparalleled
yet widely imitated, seem more at the forefront of retrospection
than ever these days. Bob Dylan claims, like just about everyone
else from his era, that the first time he heard Elvis was like
busting out of jail,"" the great deciding factor that convinced him
to become a musician and, in turn, a hero in his own right. It's
fitting then that the two seem to be at the peak of their second
waves of reverence in our modern times, starkly contrasting as
their methods may be.

ON FIRE
(10/01/07 6:00am)
If a band name referring to the act of getting high from merely
being in the presence of a destructive inferno is not a forecast of
sonic badassery, I do not know what is. Led by master guitarist
Matt Pike, High on Fire are legendary within the stoner rock
community, making new release Death Is This Communion a highly
anticipated debut in the world of underground music. Pike and
drummer Des Kensel are top performers in their fields and have
forged a distinct sound of crushing heaviness from Pike's
down-tuned, relentless riffs and Kensel's tumbling, galloping drum
onslaughts. HOF's efforts have never been as impressive as Death Is
This Communion, one of the best releases of 2007.

As finals approach, there are a few things that will invariably
follow: cramming, lack of sleep and lots of caffeine. Caffeine is
popular in the college ranks, especially when needed for that extra
kick to keep students awake. However, caffeine use can take a toll
on a drinker's health.
