Azealia Banks first announced the release of her debut album in early 2012. After numerous delays, dropping a label and igniting some ugly controversy on her Twitter, Banks slipped through the cracks of publicity and drifted from the minds of those anticipating a new release from the promising musician. Now, in similar fashion to Beyoncé’s latest release, Banks surprised the industry with the release of Broke With Expensive Taste Nov 6.

After several collaborations between the two, the forming of Run The Jewels by rappers Killer Mike and El-P wasn’t as much a surprise as was the acclaim that followed their debut. Their first release, Run The Jewels, features a barrage of aggressively intricate bars, anti-establishment backtalk and background production that will blow out your speakers if played too recklessly. Run The Jewels 2 packs just as much punch as its predecessor, but also enhances many aspects, proving the pair’s commitment to their project is higher than ever.

It isn’t uncommon for a veteran MC to take an up-and-coming rapper under their wing as a way of introducing them to the big leagues. In the case of NehruvianDOOM, self-proclaimed supervillain and lyrical mastermind MF DOOM aims to create a foundation for young rapper Bishop Nehru.

Purely instrumental bands have the difficult task of speaking to the listener without actually speaking to them, creating a new dynamic to take into account when writing songs. While not telling you anything specific or literal, the instruments set the mood for each song, reflecting the feelings of the band and projecting it to the listener.

The underground hip-hop scene is dominated by a style that flips mainstream rap on its head. Spearheaded by artists such as MF DOOM and the late J Dilla, this unique style of hip-hop puts the focus on production value. Jeremiah Jae adopts the same flair of creating experimental, complex beats, but also adds enough lyrical exposition to make Good Times a solid release.

Kelis is a name that pops up on the music radar on rare occasions, with hit singles like “Milkshake” and “Bossy” putting the young and spunky R&B artist in the spotlight for her 15 minutes of fame. With an otherwise lackluster musical career, Food adds new flavor to Kelis’ repertoire, making for a pleasant and memorable album.

Wasted Potential is a very fitting name for a band that sounds like something your parents would probably disapprove of. With obvious influences from early metal and punk, Wasted Potential’s self-titled EP is an adrenaline-fueled beast that insists on being loud and in your face at all times.

After the start of groups like N.W.A. and Wu Tang Clan, hip hop had a significant lack of rap collectives at the turn of the century. But within the last few years, groups like Top Dawg Entertainment and A$AP Mob have brought back the presence of rap collectives in the game, reigniting a wave of group-affiliated rappers. Ratking is a four-man group from New York, with a style reminiscent of old-school rap with a touch of teenage angst.

The rise of female-led electro-pop bands has been the biggest genre trend to hit music in the past few years. Artists such as Lana Del Rey and CHVRCHES have created a market for this new style, and the genre’s front-running artist Lorde was one of the major stars in the music community last year. Now, Mr Little Jeans (performing title of Monica Birkenes) enters the scene with her debut album Pocketknife. The album is fun and easy to listen to, but it’s hard to say how well Mr Little Jeans stands out against the rest of the crowd.

With the release of his critically acclaimed album Man on the Moon: The End of Day in 2009, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) was welcomed to the music scene with great reception. Over the last five years, Mescudi has altered his technique, which has been followed by mixed reviews. His latest album Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon is by far the biggest departure in style, and unfortunately it doesn’t make as big of an impact as his previous work.

After Atlanta-native rapper Rome Fortune made his debut last year with Beautiful Pimp, he’s following it up in 2014 with his second mixtape, appropriately titled Beautiful Pimp II. While the mixtape is nothing groundbreaking, Beautiful Pimp II is a very enjoyable listen, creating a spotlight for the up-and-coming rapper.

With the release of their third album, Sleepwalking Sailors, the Seattle trio Helms Alee continue to create a dichotomy of music that has worked well for them. Helms Alee can’t be clearly defined by one genre—taking elements from metal, alternative and new wave—to create a unique sound, which surprisingly works.
