I have been waiting, “researching” and reflecting about this column for a long time: a carefully crafted, undeniably subjective and inevitably controversial list of the best beer bars in Madison. Before I even get started, I want to warn you this is really just one beer geek’s opinion and that every single bar on this list is a must-try for any admirers of the almighty ale.

More than any other genre, superb action games are analogous with rhythm. At their best, when players are landing a dizzying flurry of combos in a rhythmic trance of gore, action titles generally require several hours for players to grasp the extent of their complex combat systems.

When you visit Union South and you’re hungry, the options are limited. There are burgers at the Sett, pizza at Urban Slice or stir-fry at Ginger Root. But if none of those particular tastes suit your fancy, there’s only one other choice: Harvest Grains.

OK, so this weekend I experienced a completely different, incredibly more acceptable and meaningful kind of fandom that has nothing to do with television. I imagine you are shocked that I have any real interests at all. You guys, I’m a real person, not a delirious crabfisher like you might have thought.

Are you tired of that pesky TV in your living room, taking up space, constantly showing you the same ol’ reruns of “Family Feud” and Patrick Swayze movies? Think it’s about time to ditch it in order to make room for more activities? Well, friends, you’re not alone!

The Western Percussion Ensemble—a chamber music ensemble composed of UW School of Music students—will be performing a concert tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Mills Concert Hall. Entitled “Percussion Plus,” the program will consist entirely of music composed for various groups of instruments, all of which include percussion. A host of musicians from both the UW School of Music and the community at large will join the ensemble to fill out the various instrument groupings.

A recent University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee public opinion poll about Wisconsin’s economy released Thursday reported a slight majority of residents feel the potential environmental consequences of a proposed northern Wisconsin mine outweigh its economic benefit.

When it comes to romance, nothing plucks my heart strings like the scene from “Lady and the Tramp” when Tramp generously nudges his meatball across the plate for Lady’s enjoyment and the star-crossed lovers lock lips while polishing off a spaghetti noodle. Now that, my friends, is true love at its finest. You give me that last meatball and, honey, I’m all yours. If we swap spit while devouring the same plate of spaghetti, then we can skip the awkward, no waist-down-contact embraces at the end of the evening and avoid the moment of silence where we each ponder, “Should we neck or call it a night?”

One of the things I miss most about life on the East Coast, besides the ocean, the men (sorry, not sorry), the metro and the hop-skip-jump mentality of travel on the East Coast (Baltimore? $2. New York? $12. Boston? $30.) is the food. I’m talking jumbo slice pizza for four bucks, when a single slice is as big as a kite. I’m talking pupusas from the pupuseria on the street where no one speaks English and the owner of the place treats you like you're a long-lost relative. I’m talking 5 a.m. philly cheesesteaks during an impromptu road trip to the city of brotherly love. I really want to love Madison’s food like I love the East Coast.

Wisconsin was two last-second shots away from a winless week at the Kohl Center. But what was oh-so-close to the last nail in the Badgers’ coffin ended up becoming a home stand that just may mark the defining moment in a Big Ten title run.

This past weekend was, without a doubt, one of the wildest weekends for Wisconsin athletics in recent history. I will remember where I was and who I was with when junior guard Ben Brust hit his last-second, desperation shot from 40-plus feet to send the game into overtime.

Compromise is a word we don’t often hear in regard to the stubborn, partisan Wisconsin legislature. And even when it occurs, it seems most legislators are too proud to admit such maturity could ever breach the wall of juvenility that seems to surround our state Capitol. While the controversial bill to streamline Wisconsin’s mining permit process made large steps toward bipartisanship, division within the legislature brought us back to the same old story of ego before cooperation.

Beautiful waterways and tree-lined landscapes surround declining northern Wisconsin towns that are recently seeing fewer jobs and increased conflict.

Ah, award season, that magical time of year when the film industry gets together to congratulate itself for how great it is while the rest of the country sits around and watches. And sometimes people sing. It’s a special time.

I’m ashamed to say it, but during my four years here at UW-Madison, I’ve become ridiculously familiar with all- nighters in College Library. How familiar, you ask? Familiar enough that Jay, the night librarian, and I are on first-name terms and have midnight and 4 a.m. check-ins about our respective days and our interests (he bakes a mean vegan almond vanilla cake). And though I don’t know about you, if I am staying up eight-12 hours longer than I should, my engine needs some serious energy to combat some pesky, ubiquitous thing like a circadian rhythm.

Whatever Saturday’s border battle lacked in beauty was certainly made up for in drama, as it was a missed free throw with 1.7 seconds left that ultimately proved to be the difference in a 45-44 Wisconsin victory.

PASADENA, Calif.—When the Wisconsin football team meets No. 6 Stanford in the 99th Rose Bowl later this afternoon, there appear to be more known qualities about the matchup. The Badgers’ opponent is not a little-tested but very talented Texas Christian team or an exotic, high-powered Oregon attack. This is power against power. Strength against strength. Each team relies on fundamentals to power stout front-sevens on defense. Each team has an offense built around a cornerstone talent at running back—Montee Ball for UW and Stepfan Taylor for Stanford (11-2).

Wintertime never fails to bring several things: snow, earmuffs, hot chocolate and a reality check. During the holiday season, we are constantly reminded of just how single we are. The Christmas movies are bad enough, and our loud-mouth roommate wondering out loud what to buy their significant others (since we know better than they do, right?) becomes instantly frustrating but nothing, nothing, is as persistent a reminder as a certain anonymous social medium in which Badgers everywhere are encouraged to share their every thought.
