Don't be fooled by Mogwai's latest, metal-evoking album title,
Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will: after all, this is
the same group that brought us an album called Happy Songs For
Happy People. Misleading titles aside, Mogwai's formula for
building dynamic, layered instrumental anthems has hardly changed
over the course of the Scottish quintet's 13-year career. Nor has
their ability to make consistently original, if not amazing,
albums.

As the Conservative Political Action Conference wrapped up Sunday,
the silent whisper of who will become President Obama's challenger
in 2012 turned into a roar. After the overwhelming repudiation of
the President Obama's policies last November, the next GOP nominee
could very likely be the next leader of the free world. Yet little
is known about many of these potential candidates, and even less is
known about their true intentions. The following candidates are by
no means assured to run, but are considered some of the top
contenders in 2012.

For a while Saturday afternoon I thought the events that had
transpired at the Kohl Center brought out nothing but the best this
university has to offer. Then I read this on Twitter:

The work of William Shakespeare needs no introduction. Whether it
is being performed by drama students in a high school play or with
professional stage actors at the Old Vic, Shakespeare's works are
always worth checking out, if only because his words are so
transcendent. But Madisonians are in for a special treat Thursday
when The Acting Company, one of America's leading theater
companies, comes to the Union Theater to perform one of
Shakespeare's comedies, ""A Comedy of Errors.""

Gov. Scott Walker has a problem with perception. Unlike other
politicians, who might be living in the past or who are perhaps out
of touch with reality, Walker is living almost exclusively in the
present. He is, in fact, well adept at assessing the current
political climate in order to make decisions and promises that
resonate with voters. During the 2010 election he recognized a
public distaste for Democratic leadership and a desperate need for
jobs. Thus, he bashed wasteful spending and centered his campaign
on conservative fiscal policy. His promise to create 250,000 jobs
was completely unfounded and lacked any evidence or plan, yet it
resonated with frustrated voters and got him elected. It was pure
electoral bullshit, a promise that needed only vague explanation
and one that would take years to prove or disprove.

As soon as the Wisconsin Badgers were officially proclaimed Rose
Bowl bound by ESPN on Sunday night, students raced to the athletics
website's 9 p.m. sale—snowballing ticket purchases into a
campus-wide controversy. The 5,800 tickets allocated to the
university sold out in just 20 minutes, predictably inspiring
outrage and frustration among those not lucky enough to gain
access. Fueling this frustration was the immediate sale of tickets
online through the Facebook marketplace, prompting a flood of
hateful comments toward those selling their tickets.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced yesterday
that James Franco and Anne Hathaway would co-host the Oscars Feb.
27, continuing the co-hosting precedent set last year by the
dynamic duo of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. The Academy certainly
chose to go in a younger direction with these hosts, seeing as the
combined ages of Hathaway and Franco are still less than Martin's
venerable 61 years, probably in an attempt to bring younger viewers
to the notoriously long-winded ceremony. Neither Hathaway nor
Franco is usually characterized as a particularly comedic actor,
but even if this pair of blossoming Hollywood stars isn't as
entertaining as their predecessors, Franco's presence may make for
an uncommonly tension-filled evening, as there is major Best Actor
buzz surrounding his portrayal of survivor Aron Ralston in ""127
Hours.""
