The UW softball team (16-7) departs for a series of three
doubleheaders next week, two of which will be against Big Ten
competition. The Badgers enter the road trip after a successful
comeback bid in their home opener at the Goodman Softball Complex
Tuesday. The Badgers improved their record in home openers to 10-2

Amidst the commotion on State Street that accompanies a
Halloween weekend in Madison, the most frightening occurrence took
place on the ice of the Kohl Center where the Badgers dropped two
games to Boston College.

Has anyone noticed the NBA playoffs are on? I have not. Nor has
Mel Kiper Jr. from the looks of things, as he and many others are
more involved with the NFL draft than a nagging girlfriend.
Personally, I can't watch NBA basketball. I haven't been able to
watch a whole game since Michael Jordan left the league and I don't
think I'm alone. The game has become a series of five-minute
stretches where the team with the lead refuses to play defense and
lets the losing team back into the game. It happens all the time.
Really, NBA games don't count until the final four minutes of the
fourth quarter.

Technicalities aside, I believe that despite the success of the
2000 Baltimore Ravens with Trent Dilfer under center and the 2002
Tampa Bay Buccaneers who were led by Brad Johnson, the numbers have
shown that it takes an exceptional quarterback to win Super Bowls.

Phillies star Jimmy Rollins' shot at history just ended.
Unfortunately, I don't even think it's that sad.

I can't hold it in any longer. Here's why. It was nearly in the
60s Thursday. I grilled out for dinner—brats and dogs. I had a cold
beverage or two as well. It's that kind of weather, that kind of
behavior, that kind of beverage that just brings out the best in
any red-blooded American guy. All these signs point to one simple
thing: it's baseball time.

I'm a big believer in second chances. I don't think anyone
deserves to be cast off into the sports abyss after just one error,
one bad draft, or recently, three terrible mental lapses on the
17th hole at the Bay Hill Invitational (my apologies Greg Owen, I
guess anyone can miss three puts from inside two feet).

A late season slide down a slippery slope is no good for any
team, especially if the slide is from first place, the slope a
treacherous Western Collegiate Hockey Association, and the team the
Wisconsin Badgers. The men's hockey squad has fallen from grace in
the past few weeks, descending not so gracefully from the highest
rankings of college hockey. The once dominant Badgers were riding
atop a 18-2-2 record Jan 14. The team had just swept the
fifth-ranked Tigers of Colorado College in a road series and the
Badger icers seemed invincible.

I spent nearly all summer playing golf. Sure, I had a job at a
restaurant, but I worked nights. That meant I was a twentysomething
guy with a decent amount of disposable income stranded in Hayward,
Wis. for three of the nicest months of the year. I decided to play
a lot of golf.

It ends at 588. That's it and that's all. Should Sammy Sosa
retire this year, and all events indicate that he will, 588 will be
his final home-run tally in the records of Major League
Baseball.
