It is almost certain DCNY PRO, the company granted a sponsorship
permit for the Mifflin Street Block Party, did not raise enough
money to proceed with its plans to construct stages on Mifflin
Street and find musical acts to play the event. One of the ideas
behind the sponsorship was to reduce the number of arrests, which
reached a record number last year, by getting people's minds on a
musical act and off alcohol.

The Street Use Staff Team granted a permit on Tuesday to DCNY
PRO to organize the 41st annual Mifflin Street Block Party, but
because of deadline and funding issues, it is unlikely the event
will be sponsored this year.

On many weeks this column is a place of complaining, so much that a person reading sometimes might worry that I had a sickness of the feelings. But this week is different!

From porkulus spending and financial bailouts to saving the
American automobile industry, the federal government has racked up
over $2.306 trillion in bailout money over the past year. If you
divided this payment equally among the 156.3 million American
taxpayers, you discover that the average American would pay
approximately $14,754 to the federal government in hopes of
stabilizing and improving the national economy. This is an
astounding figure equal to nearly four semesters of in-state
tuition and segregated fees here at UW-Madison. Let's take a look
at where a portion of this superfluous spending is being directed:
saving the American automobile industry, specifically the Big
Three.

Robin Hood the Socialist. How many times this week has this
phrase been uttered by conservative pundits in response to
President Barack Obama's proposed budget plan? If Rush Limbaugh's
nightly prayers are answered, Obama's proposed budget might just be
headed for failure.

Nobody embraces entropy like Black Lips. Atlanta's most
notorious rag-tag group of psych-punk rockers rifle through venues
(and, more recently, countries) with rabid exuberance and an utter
lack of regard for their own well-being, leaving an indelible mark
on anyone fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of their
physical tirades. Their 2007 opus and first studio LP released on
Vice, Good Bad Not Evil, provided a more polished depiction of
their signature hooks, each too voracious to approach three
minutes. But on 200 Million Thousand, Black Lips sound more
comfortable with themselves, allowing cohesiveness to displace
their trust in tempo, and embellishing hooks beyond what an earlier
Black Lips record might have permitted.

OpenSecrets. Sounds like a website where readers can learn the
latest celebrity gossip, but in reality, it is something so much
better, at least for the many political junkies who attend
UW-Madison.
