The longer a band takes to set up and the more instruments they have the more pretentious and difficult to relate to they will be. At least, this was what I thought before Friday night. Der Rath has hosted some interesting bands, but none that have roped me in as much as the Winter Sounds.
The Second City, a premier comedy troupe based in Chicago, is a verified comedian-machine. With the likes of Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, John Belushi and Mike Myers as alumni, their tendency to produce top-of-the-line comedians is undeniable. On March 24, the current members of Second City took the stage at the Overture Center with their Laugh Out Loud tour, and gave audiences a glimpse into the future of comedy.

Last month, the killing of 17-year-old Treyvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. caused a national uproar over the laws that protect the man who murdered the teenager. Martin was shot on his way home from a convenience store without reason by George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watch leader. The teenager was armed with only iced tea and candy, yet Zimmerman may escape criminal charges for the murder. In fact, due to Florida’s twisted self-defense laws, Zimmerman wasn’t even arrested after he killed Martin.

As with many students of rock music, the Beatles are one of my top musical influences. So I was ecstatic when I learned that a Broadway-caliber tribute show was going to be playing in town. I was even more excited when I read that it’s a chronological concert, with a number of “scenes” that represent each of the Beatles’ major musical periods.
I was told recently that my past columns have been “complain-y,” and while it sucks to hear that you sound like a sore loser, I am going to take the criticism and run with it. This time around, I am going for a spin on the happy side and we will see what happens.
Children living in the Congo sleep with one eye open in fear of machete-clad rebel soldiers rushing into their homes and kidnapping them to serve as child soldiers. Living in terror of a real life Boogieman, the youth have been coined “night commuters” as they flee to the city where they find safety in numbers. There they find peace, if only for one night.
Long after the signs were removed, the Capitol lawn was reseeded, and the thousands of protestors departed, the ever-present partisan division and immense rise in lobbyist fundraising born during the spring protests continue to define Wisconsin politics today.
A suspect, who the victim could not identify, attacked a Madison woman without reason early Saturday evening on West Johnson Street, according to police.
Last week at Sundance Cinemas in Madison I witnessed a Norwegian teenage girl engage in a seagull-killing rampage with a heavy machine gun, a neurotic time machine inventor succumb to his OCD and spend a year trying to make one rather unremarkable day in his life perfect, two Irish estranged boyhood best friends reunite after 25 years, a young German couple become embroiled in a secret child-abduction ring after adopting a young Indian boy in Kolkata and a young Irish lad brazenly defy the Catholic church in the name of his one true love-football.
TUSCON, ARIZ.-Just two weeks before the hotly contested Republican primary contests in Arizona and Michigan, Mitt Romney has been hit with stunning allegations that he has a personality.
