The ongoing debate over the ultimate college experience
continues to inspire death matches across campus. Badgers
throughout Madison argue and defend the seemingly rat-infested pit
that is Witte or the first-class, ritzy hotel that is Smith (where
are the bell men?) against the students who find comfort in the
small, almost hobbit-hole homes that make up the Lakeshore
neighborhood.

The Dardanelles is a 13-year-old Mediterranean restaurant
located on the west side of campus on Monroe Street. You can't
order a number three with fries, and the Mahi Mahi doesn't taste
like a stuffed Chipotle burrito. It's the perfect symbol for the
small-town, local atmosphere of restaurants and shops that fill the
area.

Fans of the New Pornographers have waited anxiously for three
years, but like so many things in life, the waiting makes the
reunion so much sweeter. The band will release its fifth studio
album May 4, having already released a couple of its singles,
""Crash Years"" and ""Your Hands (Together).""

Crêpes: For the enthusiastic diner, the
thought alone induces a Pavlovian-esque salivation, but for most
who have considered cooking them, crêpes conjure up images of
burned batter and battered egos—a fruitless foray into a French
cuisine shrouded in mystery. Nonetheless, while brainstorming ideas
for this week's episode of ""What's in the Fridge,"" I decided that
demonstrating a crêpe recipe (along with the appropriate fillings
and side dishes) might provide some motivation to, some small
confidence booster for those who have forever feared to try to cook
like the French. Sticking to the true French tradition, I started
off with a pound of butter, some quality vin blanc, and a fridge
full of FRESH ingredients. After much experimentation (most of
which occurred on camera), I wound up with a savory serviette piled
high with shrimp and portabella stuffed dinner crêpes, a brown-
sugar glazed vegetable sauté, and an assortment of god-sent,
chocolate-laden dessert crêpes. Bonne chance!

Determined to prove that I don't entirely hate America, the
global stage and the majesty of curling, I turned on the closing
ceremonies of the Olympics Sunday night to make an honest effort at
patriotism. And boy, did those goofy paperboy outfits worn by our
U.S. Olympians get me tearing up and screaming ""USA!"" at my TV.
I was just about to replace the back window of my pickup truck with
a painted mural of the American flag when an NBC promo flickered on
my TV:

These days, few people would admit that they can't stand movies.
Cinema continues to offer the most seductive blend of the
spectacular and the contemplative. Almost any film can be
approached as a dazzling distraction or as material for
intellectual heavy lifting; those familiar with the
Freudian-flavored analyses of the Slovenian
philosopher/psychoanalyst Slavoj Žižek or the writings of
Madison's own David Bordwell know that no movie is out of bounds
for theoretical scrutiny. The pluralistic appeal of cinema is
especially curious when one considers how unpopular literature is
today as a leisurely pursuit. Movies remain attractive to both the
attention-deficit and attention-surplus crowds. However, this isn't
to suggest that film audiences of the world stand united.

provided for you, in four pages or less.

Is there anything more adorable, more endearing than a child
writing their hopeful letters to Santa Claus? Is there nothing more
heartfelt, more cherishable in the world? The answer is yes, as I
came to learn, after intercepting a load of letters en route to the
North Pole for the big man himself. After reading the first few
lines of drivel out of some of the letters, I felt compelled to
respond (after all, am I not just as jovial and wise as the real
St. Nick?), sitting down with my ink pen and oodles of Christmas
spirit, ready to help the children of the world believe their
letters had reached Santa. Here's some of the letters and my
responses, just so everyone can appreciate the great service I've
done for the community:

En los diecisiete años que llevo viviendo en los Estados Unidos,
no fue hasta éste año que celebré Acción de Gracias por primera
vez, y me di cuenta de lo que me he estado perdiendo todo este
tiempo. Al ser italiana, mi familia nunca celebró este día y así,
cada año, mientras mis amigos volvían a sus reuniones familiares,
mi familia y yo comíamos pasta y dormíamos. Sin embargo, esté año
decidí ir a casa de mi compañera de habitación en Minnesota para
celebrar ésta festividad. Todos mis amigos me dijeron que debía
prepararme para comer más que nunca, cosa que me parecía un poco
extraña dado que al ser italiana, he tenido bastantes banquetes en
mi vida. No obstante, me preparé para el pavo, las patatas, la
tarta de calabaza y sobre todo, el ""Thanksgiving stuffing,"" una
cosa tan americana que no hay palabra adecuada en español para
describirla.

I don't know about you, but I've been counting down to
Thanksgiving break since week three of school. I love this holiday,
and you probably do too. Around this time of year, most of us can't
get turkey, stuffing, family or maybe even Christmas songs off our
minds.

As the two big T's—turkey and tests—approach, a sense of chaos
starts to creep into our lives. We come to the realization that (1)
the semester ends in four weeks, (2) most of us haven't read the
readings/gone to class/remember where the class is and (3) we just
WANT A FREAKING BREAK, THAT IS ALL WE ASK, OH MY GOSH COME ON
ALREADY!!!!

It was easy to be swept up in the elated atmosphere upon
entering the Alliant Energy Center this past weekend, as the 8th
annual Madison Food & Wine Show was in full swing. Featuring
over 150 exhibitors including wineries, cheese makers and local
restaurants and bakeries, this event is Madison's gourmet tasting
event of the year attended by over 6,000 people.

I used to sleep with him every night. He was warm, approachable,
soft to the touch. He'd lie across my bed and gaze into my eyes
with a longing usually reserved for a platter of chocolate chip
cookies after dinner. He was my confidante, my companion, my second
