East Coast punk rock has not been the same since Dropkick Murphys
began, taking their Irish Boston roots and mixing them with punk
rock. Heavier than the Pogues or Flogging Molly, the band has a lot
of energy while still incorporating a traditional folk sound, and
are back with a new album Going Out In Style. The band has
said that this is a concept album about a character named Cornelius
Larkin, but it doesn't really feel that different from their other
records.

The Badger women's hockey team opens postseason play this weekend
with a best of three series against St. Cloud State. Awarded the
first overall seed in this year's WCHA playoffs, Wisconsin (24-2-2
WCHA, 30-2-2 overall) will host the Huskies (1-26-1, 1-31-1) at the
Eagles Nest in Verona.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker thought he received a call from a
billionaire campaign financier Tuesday afternoon, but it turns out
the editor of an online news site pulled a prank on him.

It's easy to see why the hype is building around the UW men's
hockey team.

Political science professors Howard Schweber and Jeremy Menchik
expressed optimism about a democratic Egypt but doubted the ability
of protesters to bring it about at a forum Tuesday.

In light of the fact that both of my roommates' boy toys are
currently over at our apartment right now and Valentine's Day is
looming on the horizon, I thought this column would be appropriate.
Unlike many single females roaming the streets on Valentine's Day
with a box of half eaten chocolates in one hand and a bottle of
wine and ""The Notebook"" in the other, I will not harbor bitter
resentment about flyin' solo.

Instead of being perpetually tormented by Christmas carols and
merry fucking mistletoe now that Christmas is left sorely behind,
I'm haunted by the nightmare of gift returns and their
unintelligible overlords—customer service representatives.

I'd bet that after his caustic performance emceeing the 68th Golden
Globe Awards this past Sunday, Ricky Gervais won't be invited back
for a hosting three-peat.

I know everyone missed reading my loads of excessively profane
birdshit while we were away for winter break. Now that you're all
back, 10 pounds heavier with caffeine-blood running through your
veins from too much Bailey's and coffee, I think it's high time I
do something to help everyone start the semester out right. So, I
came up with this brainchild of an advice column for your benefit.
I also had nothing better to do while flying over Kansas.

Wisconsin's season of power running came to an end with TCU junior
linebacker Tank Carder's tip of a Scott Tolzien pass in the fourth
quarter that would have given the Badgers a two-point conversion
and a tie game.

As I drove back to Madison Sunday in dreary weather, all I could
think was, ""What the heck am I doing? Did I really leave the
comfort of my home for this crap?""

Lately, my cat Pebbles and I have been in a rut (Don't be
mistaken —Pebbles is a boy. I realize there might be confusion).
He's moody and disconnected and I think our relationship is in
danger of falling to pieces.

ANN ARBOR, MICH—All week, Saturday's matchup between No. 6
Wisconsin (6-1 Big Ten, 10-1 overall) and Michigan (3-4, 7-4) was
billed as a potential track meet. Still, when the Wolverines'
offense hit full stride in the third quarter, the collective inhale
from Badger nation could be felt in Ann Arbor. However, just as it
has done all season, the UW offense countered with consistency,
execution, leadership and—most importantly—points in a 48-28
victory.

Joy to the world and behold! 'Tis the ""Chrismahanukwanzakah""
holiday season! Corporate consumerism for the holidays has begun,
but every year Scrooges mumble that this holly jolly season begins
earlier and earlier. This negative sentiment is, in fact, not true.
Somehow, the general public is annually surprised to see Rudolph,
smell fake pine, and hear Mariah Carey and the crunch of tinsel
around Halloween—still refusing to accept that the costumed booze
fest is now the start to the holiday season. What about
Thanksgiving? What about waiting for snow? What about passing me
that Starbucks peppermint mocha in the red cup?

From humble beginnings of ciphers on sidewalks to the spotlight of
commercial media, hip-hop has gone through transformations that
challenged its integrity. In Madison, there is a movement to
acknowledge its presence within a community dynamic. This past
Sunday night the Barrymore Theater played host to Madison's First
Annual Hip-Hop Awards. While its resources were not humble—smoke
machine, lasers, advanced lighting, the nature of the prefix
""first"" captures the modest beginning of this newborn event, one
that glorifies the positive in hip-hop.

If nice guys finish last, then Archie Powell is one gracious loser.
On Skip Work, the debut LP from Archie Powell & The
Exports, the down-on-his-luck songwriter grinds many of the same
small town, every man stones of chest thumping blue collar life
while keeping a cheeky wit.

Unlike recent years, the Wisconsin women's basketball team is
entering a season with something hanging over them—expectations.
Returning all five starters in 2009, the team emerged from
virtually nowhere to put together a 21-11 season, a third place
conference finish while earning a seventh seed in the NCAA
Tournament.

As Madison residents anticipate the weekend of masquerade and
drunkenness that is Halloween, members of Grammy-winning band OK Go
are looking forward to putting on a great show for them. Set to
perform at Freakfest Saturday, the band will take the Mountain Dew
& Amp Stage at midnight, giving the crowd on State Street
something other than costumes and beer to get excited about.

As a youngin', Halloween was a sign that there was a higher power
that wanted me to be supremely happy—or at least the best gift I
could ever receive, by far, from monstrous candy corporations like
Hershey and Nestle. I never really put too much creative thought
into my costume, considering I went as a witch four years in a
row.
