It is not far-fetched to imagine October to be one of the most troubling times of the year for people of color. Being a week out of October, people of color can finally take a breath that the month is over. Just as the Holloween months of past years, we can annoyingly reflect on the sudden spike of blatant and justified racism we see roaming the streets, speaking in the classrooms and simply living beside us on the day-to-day basis. And we can only grieve in understanding that the costuming of culture, the dismissed threats and the attacks on our lives will continue unchecked by the institutions that support them.

The start of a new school year. The celebration of a Badger football game. The birthday of a lab partner’s roommate’s pet fish. The ability to dress like a workout “bro” or a yoga “hoe.” What do all these things have in common? They are all reasons, or some would say excuses, that students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison include alcohol in their college experiences. While some would say that kicking back and relaxing with a beer at the end of a hard week of classes—or getting black- out drunk because the previous week was so grueling you just want to forget everything—is just part of the Wisconsin experience, is it really necessary to fill every moment of your four years of college with alcohol?

This past summer I took a creative writing class, during which my professor told us that fiction about college is often unsuccessful because publishers and audiences often regard college experiences as somewhat childish or ordinary. Everyone gets their heart broken, everyone experiences the fear and thrill that comes with newfound independence, everyone changes and grows when surrounded by new and different people and ideas and everyone (more or less) makes it out on the other side, or so the thinking goes.

The summer before freshman year is an exciting time. You’ve made it to UW-Madison. The idea of finally starting your college experience can be relieving yet stressful. We remember feeling so uncertain about the future when we moved in just two years ago. But uncertainty can be a positive opportunity for growth and openness in a new place.

Along with thousands of other fresh-faced students on campus, this is a perfect way to begin your first Friday night in Madison! Madison’s art scene still blows me away to this day. After spending my first year at UW-Madison, there’s no doubt that this city attracts an amazing array of performances and immense talent that shaped my freshman year. From concerts at iconic venues like The Orpheum, performance art at the beautiful Overture Center, to simply walking down the street listening to music on my own, it’s quite apparent that there’s no shortage of artistic expression in this city. It’s this artistic expression and freedom that gives people a chance to have experiences that will help shape their lives and who they are.
