Thursday night’s audience at the Majestic was alive. Fists in the air, they matched Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace word-for-word as the band blasted their way through a set list that dug deep into the story of the Gainesville, Fla.’s punk rock titans. The audience caved in on itself in a crowd-wide mosh pit. Fans’ hearts set ablaze by hearing their favorite songs through the amplifiers.

It was the dead of night. I found myself cowering beneath a canopy of blankets in the center of a dark room, illuminated only by the flickers of a television set that served to feed my growing paranoia. I was alone; or was I?

It is done. The Wichita State Shockers finished their regular season Sunday and are undefeated. I don’t care what conference you’re in, that’s an incredible achievement. But not many people agree with that statement.

Last summer, I holed up in an air-conditioned room and didn’t resurface until I had binged the entire first season of "House of Cards," Netflix’s first successful stab at original programming. The opening scene is still as vivid in my mind today as it was those many months ago—we hear a dog get hit by a car offscreen and an impeccably dressed Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) arrives at the pitiful scene. While wrapping his bare hands around the neck of the whimpering dog, he looks directly at the camera and delivers the first of many monologues in a quaint, southern accent. He squeezes until its cries become faint and, after a few seconds, they cease altogether. We get the sense that Frank Underwood is the epitome of a ruthless pragmatist and a perfect spokesperson for the political underworld.

Three years since her last release, St. Vincent (moniker of Annie Clark) storms back onto the alternative music scene Tuesday with the release of her fourth album, a self-titled LP of biting commentary on the digital age and cult leaders. Clark, the Texas native whose first album Marry Me debuted seven years ago, has continually reshaped her sound with every album and collaboration.

After two and a half days among rubble, Reba Sikder lost track of whether it was day or night, enumerating her hours by the number of silenced screams around her.

My name is Chris Hoffman and I’m running to be the District 5 County Board Supervisor because I want to represent your voice. County government offers opportunities for professional development and networking that are hugely underutilized by students. This is one of the primary reasons I am running: when elected, I will act as a liaison for students who want to further their involvement in local government. Increasing student involvement would be accomplished through student appointments to county committees and internships. Giving students these skill-building experiences is important for ensuring a long-lasting, strong connection between students and their county government. I understand the importance of utilizing the County committee system via my own appointment to the County Environmental Council. However, there is one pressing issue that I will address further: campus safety.

It’s easier to sing about heartbreak than love, as Minneapolis’ Jeremy Messersmith proves on Heart Murmurs. On his fourth release, Messersmith touches on the different facets of love—the firsts, the unrequited and the breakups—with delicate ease, though sometimes at the expense of raw feeling.

Breakups and music seem to go hand-in-hand. Maybe it’s because our emotions are so damn confusing that we can’t figure them out without the help of some of our favorite musical geniuses. Or maybe there are just so many songs written about break-ups it’s almost impossible not to find one you can relate to.

This is my last column of 2013. Instead of reflecting on the semester, getting all gooey thinking about stories even my mom refuses to read, I wanted to go out with a bang. So, I tried to come up with the perfect column concept.

Hi everyone, I’m feeling under the weather today, so instead of writing a whole article about things, people and ideas I hate, I thought we could just you know, talk. Like, one-on-one. Me and you, the reader.

You’ve just moved into an empty, back-lot apartment accessible only by a dumpster-laden alley and neither of your roommates will arrive for a few weeks. What could you possibly do to entertain yourself on a Tuesday night?
