So a few days ago I was at Memorial Union, you know, the one by the
lake. I was shamefully stuffing my face with soggy Rathskeller
fries and a not at all unexpected overcooked Badger Burger, when I
unfortunately ran into an acquaintance of mine from high-school
chess club.

Without a spat after the game that manifested itself at midfield
between Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster and Wisconsin head coach
Bret Bielema in regards to Bielema's decision to try for the two
point conversion despite being up by 25 points in the fourth
quarter, this would have been one of the least dramatic battles for
Paul Bunyan's Axe in recent memory.

Usually when one college football team is favored by better than
three touchdowns over another, the outcome is predictable. The
annual rivalry game between Wisconsin and Minnesota, however,
rarely is.

axe: The Wisconsin Badgers will look to claim Paul Bunyan?s Axe
for the seventh straight year when the nation?s most-played rivalry
returns to Camp Randall Saturday.
(10/07/10 6:00am)
There are few rivalries in sports as storied as the one between the
Wisconsin Badgers and the Minnesota Golden Gophers. This weekend's
border battle will mark the 120th time these two teams have met on
the gridiron, making it the most-played rivalry in all of college
football. This weekend Paul Bunyan's Axe will again be on the line,
as it has been since 1948.

Since Saturday's loss against Michigan State, plenty of people have
noted that head coach Bret Bielema's career record against ranked
Big Ten teams now stands at 1-8. Minnesota is not ranked this
year—not even close, really—but they are Wisconsin's archrival, and
Bielema has their number.
(10/04/10 6:00am)
From the beginning of his weekly press conference Monday, Wisconsin
football head coach Bret Bielema made it clear that he is excited
to get back to work following a tough loss to Michigan State in
East Lansing Saturday.

The Big Ten announced divisional alignment Wednesday for the
conference starting in 2011 when Nebraska officially becomes a
participating member. Since Nebraska officially joined the Big Ten
in June, there has been much speculation and anticipation as to how
a divisional setup would look.

UW-Madison students rarely need more reasons to look forward to the
weekend. But this fall, fans will be treated to a few special
weekends that might just make Monday to Thursday a bit more
bearable.

With expectations high for this year's football team, many are
projecting the Badgers to have a win total in the double-digits. It
is easy enough to run down the schedule and assign wins and losses
on a first-glance basis, but here is an overview of Wisconsin's
conference schedule following a preseason featuring UNLV, Arizona
State, San Jose State, and Austin Peavy to aid in your pre-season
prognostication.

2008 Badger-Gopher game: Both Bielema and Gophers head coach Tim
Brewster have made it clear that the teams' annual battle for the
Mighty Axe should remain regardless of how the Big Ten
realligns.

Mighty Axe battle: Once again one of the Badgers' most highly
anticipated matchups will be their battle against Minnesota for the
Mighty Axe.

I remember my first Badger game quite well — on Aug. 30, 2008,
the Badgers took the field at Camp Randall Stadium and trounced
Akron 38-17 while I watched from section P in the north end zone.
Obviously, I knew every single cheer, belted out the lyrics to all
of the songs the PA system played, had every student section chants
memorized and flawlessly executed the Time Warp dance during the
Fifth Quarter.

President Obama promised to stand up for what is right, not what
is popular. So he can't be very surprised by the chilly reception
some are giving his plan to cut a NASA moon-landing program.

Today marks the beginning of an exciting time in the sporting
world. It's a time of Sweet Sixteen matchups, ruined brackets and
round-the-clock score checking to see how your picks performed. No,
silly, I'm not talking about the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I'm
talking about the 2010 Madison Notables Fight to the Death
Tournament! Featuring 16 of Madison's most well-known figures, each
will battle in various Madison locales until there is one bloodied,
battered champion left. I've included my bracket and analysis below
for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

A U.S. soccer player making it big overseas is like the
Cincinnati Bengals having a season without one of their players
being arrested: a rare and pleasant surprise. And just like the
Bengals' ever-increasing number of players in jail, the consistent
failure of American footballers across the pond has become a
favorite punch line in the media. Once in a while, though, an
attempt to play with the big boys pans out—Tim Howard, Clint
Dempsey and, most recently, Landon Donovan. These occurrences are
all too rare and must happen more often if the U.S. is to gain more
credibility in the soccer world.

A few months ago, the unthinkable happened. I was browsing
through Facebook, hitting all the usual profiles I creep on (I'm
talking to you, Katie), when a friend request popped up. It was my
little brother, Nolan. My 14-year-old,
still-in-eighth-grade-brother. My
plays-PS3-an-unhealthy-amount-and-is-only-two-years-removed-from-collecting-Yu-Gi-Oh!-Cards
brother. To put it in web lingo, WTF?
