Imagine a world where 20 percent of the human genome is patented. A world in which people have no right to their own tissues. Researchers publish false findings in peer-reviewed journals, and universities pay for discoveries with public dollars and then turn around and profit off them. Imagine a world where transgenic animals are created for research, for art and for pets.
The big men were the players who scored in double figures Tuesday night, but it was the play of the guards that stood out the most. Freshman Michael Flowers and senior Sharif Chambliss showed what they could do off the bench while sophomore Kammron Taylor proved he is capable of starting and running the point guard spot.
Ciudad Juarez, a city on Mexico's northern border just across from El Paso, Texas is called \The City of Dead Girls."" Since 1993, it is estimated that between 320 and 600 young women have disappeared and been murdered in the city. The crimes have several things in common: All of the victims are young women, are an average age of 16, are poor and are either workers or students. Many of the victims are beaten, tortured and gang-raped before they are killed. Their bodies are dumped on the outskirts of town and in the deserts. A decade of serial murders has created a new word-feminocide-but has led to no convictions and the killings continue today.
As was recently reported in campus newspapers across the country, dorm porn is alive and well. For some, it's just too tempting to hook up that digital video camera and live-stream a steamy masturbation session to your boyfriend and a few other onlookers on the web.
Millions of dollars are made weekly from the videos and DVDs of women baring their breasts while on spring break or at Mardi Gras. What's the big deal? All women have breasts of various sizes; you can easily see them on numerous Web sites, in magazines and on late-night TV. Why do we thrill to see a drunken, scantily clad young woman pull up her top? I believe it's because we're all voyeurs to some extent. Seeing others engaging in sexual activity or simply showing parts of their bodies excites us. But there's a deeper truth to this spring break/Mardi Gras phenomenon.
Dear readers,
As Will Rogers once said, \We are all ignorant. We are all just ignorant of different things."" Patrick Meehan's letter on Thursday ['UW ""white culture"" stops recognition of race issues,' Dec. 5] proves this to be true.
Dear Anal Obsessed Soc. 160 TA: My family is considerably wealthier than my future groom's family. We are planning a spring wedding and I'm wondering what the groom's family and the bride's side should pay for?
We recently showed two movies for extra credit in our human sexuality class, \Breasts"" and ""Private Dicks.""
A recent reading for our class, Human Sexuality Psy/Soc 160, describes a young couple seeking advice on \where to find the g-spot."" This might not seem so surprising except for the fact that these are fourteen-year-olds who had asked for advice at their local Teen Center in Salt Lake City, UT. You see, they had been having sex for awhile and were looking to increase their mutual sexual pleasure.
So, I'm a married woman. Instantly you think, \No sex!"" Especially when I tell you that I've been married for eight-and-a-half years now, you'll think the sex must be boring and infrequent. What if I told you that I, a female graduate student, married another woman? Does the term, ""Lesbian Bed Death"" come to mind?
