Researchers find size really does matter

A recent study has shown that the size of one's brain is directly linked to his inherited genes. The study also found that the size of certain parts of the brain can directly affect intelligence.

Paul Thompson of the University of California at Los Angeles led the team that discovered their relationships with some help from Finland

By using magnetic resonance imaging, Thompson was able to differentiate grey matter from white matter in the brain. The white matter is wiring, like ethernet cable, that connects portions of grey matter, which act like the central computer of the brain.

Because Finland keeps a registry of twins, Thompson was able to study identical and fraternal twins. He found that identical twins, who share identical genes, had remarkably similar brain sizes. Fraternal twins showed more differences in brain sizes because they share 50 percent of their genes.

Although Thompson only tested 20 pairs of twins total, he told The New York Times the subjects gave \enough statistical power to identify the key brain systems.\
