Volleyball sweeps conference foes Illinois, Indiana

After this weekend's home matches against Illinois and Indiana, Wisconsin volleyball starts a new game-winning streak of six after ending its old streak of 26 last weekend at Ohio.  

 

 

 

Friday night, the Badgers defeated the Fighting Illini 30-20, 30-22 and 30-24 at UW Field House.  

 

 

 

Senior middle blocker Sherisa Livingston led the Badgers to victory with 16 kills out of 57 kills for Wisconsin. The Illini made 36 kills. Senior setter Lizzy Fitzgerald made 46 assists throughout the match.

Saturday's win against the Indiana Hoosiers brought the Badgers 13-1 in Big Ten Conference play. Wisconsin swept Indiana 30-26, 30-12 and 30-21.  

 

 

 

The Badgers made 55 kills to the Hoosiers' 33. Junior outside hitter Erin Byrd gave the Badgers 13 kills and three service aces. Livingston also made 13 kills and Fitzgerald had 45 assists.  

 

 

 

\I thought it was a really good weekend for us to come back home and get us ready for next weekend on the road,"" Head Coach Pete Waite said. 

 

Men's hockey splits with defending National Champions

The men's hockey team proved themselves worthy of the attention of defending NCAA champions Boston College when the Eagles took a trip to the Kohl Center this weekend. 

 

 

 

The Badgers split the series by claiming a 5-2 victory Friday night but falling to the Eagles 3-1 Saturday.  

 

 

 

Junior goaltender Scott Kabotoff held Boston College's offense at bay Friday with 41 saves while five different Badgers put the puck in the net for Wisconsin. The Badgers also held Boston College scoreless on eight power play opportunities.  

 

 

 

The Badgers were not as successful Saturday night as senior center Kent Davyduke produced the only Wisconsin goal of the night on a Badger power play. Kabotoff stopped the puck at the net for 27 saves in his 58:37 minutes of play. 

 

Women's hockey downed twice by Minnesota-Duluth

The Wisconsin women's hockey team came up empty-handed this weekend as rival team Minnesota-Duluth swept the series at the Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, Wis.  

 

 

 

The Bulldogs scored the only goal at 10:33 in the first period and the teams remained even in shots on goal throughout the rest of the game. UW goaltender Jackie MacMillan and UMD's Patricia Sautter had 17 saves apiece in the evenly-matched contest.  

 

 

 

Saturday's game resulted in another loss for the women, this time with a final score of 2-1. A goal by freshman Molly Engstrom late in the second period put UW on the board but, they were unable to produce another goal.  

 

 

 

A Bulldogs goal on a power play tied the score and forced the game into overtime. UMD capitalized once again on a power play goal when UMD's Laurie Alexander put the puck in the net.  

 

Men's soccer ends season with victory over Ohio State

The men's soccer team ended its regular season on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Ohio State Saturday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Wisconsin (3-3-0 Big Ten, 10-7-1 overall) earned its third shutout of the season at the hands of UW goalkeeper junior Phil Ayoub, who made two saves in 72:46.  

 

 

 

A feed to freshman midfielder Noah Goerlitz from defenseman Scott Repa gave forward Aaron Lauber the opportunity to put the ball in the Buckeye's net at 54:22 in the game.  

 

 

 

Ohio State drops to 1-4-1 in the Big Ten and 10-7-1 overall.  

 

Wisconsin defeats AAU Select team in exhibition action

The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team opened up its 2001-'02 season in style. While the game will not go down in the win column as a victory, Badgerball looked impressive in a 98-86 victory over the Wisconsin AAU Select team. 

 

 

 

Leading the way for the Badgers was senior center Jessie Stomski with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Tamara Moore also garnered a double-double with 11 assists to go along with 14 points. 

 

 

 

UW Head Coach Jane Albright was pleased with what she saw from the squad, especially in the opening half. 

 

 

 

""I think they showed that they are a team,"" Albright said. ""I think we were exceptional in the first half. 

 

 

 

Wisconsin has one more exhibition game, Tuesday night at the Field House against Athletes in Action at 7 p.m. 

 

Women's soccer falls to Redbirds, defeats Billikens in season finale

Although the women's soccer team played a stifling defense in the first half of the game against Illinois State, they came up short in the end and lost to the Redbirds, 2-1.  

 

 

 

Sophomore Jenny Kundert scored the only goal for UW late in the first period but a pair of ISU goals in the second, one with 15 seconds left in the game, gave Illinois the victory. 

 

 

 

Wisconsin celebrated its final game of the season with a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Billikens Sunday.  

 

 

 

In St. Louis, senior Natalie Roedler scored twice, freshman Molly Meuer kicked her first collegiate goal and junior Lauren Schimit scored on a header to lead UW to victory.  

 

 

 

""It was an unbelievable game,"" Head Coach Dean Durst said. ""What a way to close out the year on a high note.""
