Guest speaker explores the connection between white nationalists and Norse mythology

Merrill Kaplan, a scholar at Ohio State University, came to UW-Madison on Friday to give a lecture on how white nationalists leverage Norse symbology in their favor. Kaplan began by citing the casting of Idris Elba, a black actor, as Heimdall in the recent Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok as a case of inauthenticity. She also elaborated that authenticity is not actually a real concept.

Oregon schools put on lockdown over gun threat

Three schools in Oregon, Wisconsin, a village 10 miles from Madison, were placed on a “soft lockdown” after rumors of a student bringing a gun to school surfaced Monday morning. According to the Oregon Police Department, police received information that a student overheard other students talking about a gun they brought to school.

Naive freshman answers call from parents while at party

Stumbling through a room full of girls he had failed to get the numbers of, Matt Blaker, a UW-Madison freshman, had one task on his mind: successfully convincing his parents that he was anything but partying. Correspondents on the scene of a Mifflin Street house party last Friday night reportedly overheard bits and pieces of a disgruntled phone call he was engaged in at 1:45 in the morning. “I don’t think he realized that anyone talking to him over the phone would have heard Kanye West playing in the background,” said a field reporter. “It was a mess,” another correspondent stated.
