The Melvins far from ‘senile’ with experimental groundbreaking album

The Melvins have always fallen short of the mainstream""maybe that's why they're so damn good. They heavily influenced the grunge movement and inspired more than a few doom metal acts with their savagely slow tempos and fanatically fuzzed-out guitars. But sadly, the FM gods have denied the radio-listening public the pleasure of the Melvins' eclectic rock cocktail.

Women’s basketball gets big home victory

Wisconsin head coach Lisa Stone had two things to celebrate Sunday afternoon as the Wisconsin women's basketball team (5-4 Big Ten, 16-6 overall) defeated Minnesota 70-57 at the Kohl Center in front of a crowd of 15,269 people. Stone donated 25 cents per fan in attendance to the Gilda's Club Madison, a nonprofit cancer foundation, for the ‘Raise the Roof' event. Stone was impressed with the crowd turnout and decided to donate a total of $4,285.50 to match a sellout crowd. This number was matched by the American Transmission Company, and Bucky's Locker Room also donated $2,000, for a grand total of over $10,000.

Jaded Julia and her broken bracelet

It took me approximately 12 seconds to register what I saw lying on the bathroom floor — my jade bracelet broken into four separate pieces. At first, I thought I was looking at a surreal photograph or having a mean joke played on me. '

Though grand in its attempt, ‘Perfume’ proves to be unfilmable

Creating an original, compelling film from scratch is hard enough, but adapting a popular novel into a successful movie brings its own unique set of complications. With the exception of books by authors like Elmore Leonard, who writes terse yet vivid prose that is naturally cinematic, it's impossible to perfectly replicate material from the page to the silver screen. Then there are those pesky books that, for one reason or another are deemed unfilmable,"" like ""Naked Lunch,"" ""A Confederacy of Dunces"" or anything by Kurt Vonnegut or Thomas Pynchon. Patrick Suskind's 1985 cult novel ""Perfume: The Story of Murderer"" was considered one of them after some notable filmmakers""such as Stanley Kubrick""tried and failed to adapt it. But now ""Run Lola Run"" director Tom Tykwer has done it, and while his ""Perfume"" is a visually astounding, well-paced effort, the results are certainly mixed.

Soderbergh’s new film ‘good,’ nostalgic and beautiful

The Good German"" is a curiosity of a film""a homage to 1940s noir classics without the hard-boiled dialogue, a vivid aesthetic recreation rife with narrative anachronisms and a nostalgic celebration of the silver screen without a shred of sentimentality. It's no wonder that Warner Bros. has all but given up on marketing the film, which when combined with lukewarm reception by New York and Los Angeles critics will likely lead to the film's quick burial among the DVD racks, perhaps alongside the very films from which it borrows""most notably: ""Casablanca,"" ""The Third Man"" and ""A Foreign Affair."" While not likely to connect with mainstream audiences, however, the film is still a joy to behold, and should prove a worthwhile viewing experience for film students and cinephiles alike.
