The top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team welcomed No. 10 Ohio
State to the Kohl Center last weekend, and next weekend it will
travel to Minnesota to take on the No. 6 Gophers. Between those two
series, the Badgers will finish their eight-game season-opening
homestand with a pair of games against Minnesota State, an
unremarkable 2-3-1 squad still struggling to move up from the lower
rungs of the WCHA ladder.

Not sure if you're aware of this, but this weekend is Halloween and
here in Madison the holiday is rather important. I'm guessing most
people have already picked their costume(s) for Friday and Saturday
nights, but for those still wondering I'm here to help with some
distinctly Wisconsin costumes.

With both teams averaging better than four goals per game heading

It's a rite of fall, really. The leaves change, the temperature
drops (theoretically), students show up late to football games and
columnists spend a few hundred words decrying those empty bleachers
in the north end zone. Frankly, I'm surprised we made it this far
in the year without one of them.

Junior forward Carolyne Prevost does not get many opportunities to
play in front of her family. So the Sarnia, Ontario, native made
the most of her chance Friday, powering the Wisconsin offense to a
7-1 win, the first of two victories to open conference play.

of the country this weekend: They are back.

If the 2008-'09 Wisconsin women's hockey team was defined by what
is lost, this year's squad must be about what it is getting
back.

This isn't exactly going to be a groundbreaking observation, but
it's true: rivalries are the backbone of college sports.

Last Saturday, the notoriously large Wisconsin traveling fan base
got a look at Las Vegas during the Badgers' 41-21 win over UNLV.
Tuesday evening, those who tuned into ""One Night in Vegas,"" the
latest in ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary series, saw a different side
of the desert city.

While many Badger fans count the days until football season starts,
a taste of hockey came to the Kohl Center in the middle of August.
Adam Burish, the Madison native who helped Wisconsin's men's hockey

Every university has its unique set of gameday songs and dances,
and Wisconsin is no different. Camp Randall Stadium and the Kohl
Center are not just legendary for their loud, raucous fans but also
for the proud traditions their fans carry on at every event.

I remember my first Badger game quite well — on Aug. 30, 2008,
the Badgers took the field at Camp Randall Stadium and trounced
Akron 38-17 while I watched from section P in the north end zone.
Obviously, I knew every single cheer, belted out the lyrics to all
of the songs the PA system played, had every student section chants
memorized and flawlessly executed the Time Warp dance during the
Fifth Quarter.
