“Stop the problem before it starts.” This timeless adage has
been offered as a solution to dilemmas both big and small, each
time serving as valuable and effective words to live by. In the
case of certain problems facing the UW-Madison campus, the
situation is no different.

I spent all four years of high school playing flute in the
marching band, a reality I, for a number of reasons, was not
terribly thrilled with.

Have you ever had one of those weeks were nothing—absolutely
nothing!—funny happens to you, but your friends’ lives seem to be a
constant source of amusement? Welp, that was my life last week. In
the continual cycle of coffee, class and work, my existence turned
completely lackluster. Thank goodness for the absurdities of
others.

I have zero acting or singing ability, and thus my chances of
becoming a celebrity are slim to none. I'm generally OK with this
fact. It is a given these days that if you have any modicum of
fame, Star Magazine will print a gigantic picture of the cellulite
in your butt on its cover with the tagline ""Which celebrity has
let herself go?"" I don't find that prospect too terribly
appealing.

I saw ""Drive"" last week. Great film. It had a cool,
1980s feel, interesting camera angles and a fitting
soundtrack. Seeing it was an all-around enjoyable time.

Like most people, my mind tends to wander as I fall asleep at
night. Unlike most perfectly healthy 21-year-olds, my mind wanders
to, ""HOLY SHIT WHAT IF I DIE IN MY SLEEP TONIGHT?"" Perhaps all
the sodium from the Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos is going to my head,
but I can't help but worry about the possibility of dying before I
wake.

Back in high school, I liked to fancy myself a rebel. This not only
shone through in my music and makeup choices—I was ""emo"" at one
point, by which I mean I wore copious amounts of black eyeliner—but
also my politics.

Welp, it's official. I am a senior at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison. This means a number of things: I find myself
bawling, ""This is the last time I'll ever (insert token
Wisco-activity here),"" on a disturbingly regular
basis. I never turn down a cold Spotted Cow or a loaf of fresh,
spicy cheesy bread because I don't know how many more times such
opportunities will come around. (Note: I've gained five pounds
since returning to Madison.) Lastly, I have mastered how to get an
A without reading and/or buying textbooks. (Just kidding, Mom and
Dad!)

Last week, thousands of freshmen descended onto the UW-Madison
campus. Eager to start the next chapter of their lives, most are
delightfully overwhelmed with everything this tremendous university
has to offer. Most are also undereducated about a reality plaguing
this campus: Sexual assault.

It is very difficult to make a film full of Anne Hathaway's naked
breasts and Jake Gyllenhaal's bare butt unpleasant, but director
Edward Zwick (""Glory"") finds a way to do so with ""Love and Other
Drugs.""

Making a movie about the life of a great artist is a big
responsibility. Some have done so successfully: Vincente Minnelli's
""Lust for Life,"" a film about the relationship between Vincent
Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, is considered by many to be the best
film about an artist ever made. Others have not faired so well.
""Factory Girl"" tells the story of Andy Warhol's muse, Edie
Sedgwick, and was reviewed by many as shallow.

What do you do when you are asked to play America's youngest
billionaire? Apparently, you take fencing lessons. That is what
Jesse Eisenberg did when he took on the role of Mark Zuckerberg in
the new motion picture "The Social Network," a film about the
creation of Facebook.

Like it or not, celebrities have more power over the public's
mindset than those in office. Laws deeming sexual assault and rape
illegal are enforced in all 50 states, yet the entertainment
industry depicts the crime in such a way that society perceives it
as permissible.

Forty years ago, Joni Mitchell released her album Ladies of the
Canyon. On it was the song ""Big Yellow Taxi."" In the track,
her iconic voice sings, ""they paved paradise and put up a parking
lot.""

""Going the Distance"" has the structure of every other romantic
comedy. Boy meets girl. Girl isn't looking for anything too
serious. Boy is OK with that. Girl and boy end up falling in love.
This love is put in jeopardy. There is a brief breakup
characterized by images of moping and contemplation. Boy and girl
get some sense and they both live happily ever after.

Perhaps it's because I'm in a long-distance relationship that I
initially liked Magic Kids' new album, Memphis. The first song's
lyrics include ""I'm scared of you leaving me here alone ... I'll
be waiting here right by the phone / I'll be waiting here till you
come home."" I'm their target audience; I'm supposed to eat all
that up.

At first glance, Madison may seem to have a somewhat unlucky
location when it comes to booking bands. With the Twin Cities to
the north, Milwaukee to the east and Chicago to the south, there is
the potential for a lot of competition when it comes to where bands
choose to book shows.

With websites like YouTube and College Humor dominating people's
browsers, funny online videos are appreciated more than ever.
Millions have viewed videos like ""Trololo"" and ""Charlie Bit My
Finger,"" turning obscure footage into a raucous collective
experience.

The Second City is a Chicago tradition, conceived in 1959 in the
city's Old Town neighborhood. Since then it has grown into a comedy
enterprise, gaining increasing amounts of fame and respect for its
improvisational sketch comedy. This past year marked Second City's
50th anniversary. In celebration of this monumental event, the
theater has taken to the road, bringing their infamous comedy
cross-country, including a visit to Madison this Friday.
