And so the countdown begins. In less than one month, I will graduate from my beloved University of Wisconsin-Madison. This reality has lead to a comprehensive slew of emotions, among them being displeasure with life’s general fleetingness. I have found the best way to deal with these circumstances is to live in the moment as best I can and focus on why I have loved UW so much: the people. Please allow me to tell you about one in particular.

You hear it hundreds of times before you come to college: “Watch out for the ‘Freshman Fifteen.’” This sentence is always uttered by well-meaning, “been there, done that”-type personalities, people who like to imply that they know more than you because they graduated college before the turn of the century. What these people are referring to is the imminent and rapid onset of body fat due to increased consumption of beer, chasers and late night Juston sticks. The idea you could have pizza for nearly every meal of your freshman existence is just too much for some people to restrain themselves (myself included). As a result, this all too common affliction creates beer bellies on formerly fit football jocks and puts lovely love handles on ladies; handles that will not look cute in even the blackest of LBDs.I believe wholeheartedly the fear of the “Freshman Fifteen” is what keeps the SERF alive and well all year ‘round.

Over the past four years, I have made an annual pilgrimage to Champaign, Ill. It is not exactly my favorite place on the planet: I prefer cities where trees outnumber gas stations. Still, one of my best friends from high school, Kelsey, is a student there, so I happily make the trek down once every 365 days.

Election officials have concluded the 100 votes cast by students at Gordon Commons in Tuesday’s spring primary were submitted by accident, as students believed they were taking a poll on their favorite University Housing meal.

I started my senior year with two goals I hoped to accomplish by
the end of the 30 weeks: graduate and return to the weight I first
walked through Witte’s doors at. Like most college students, I have
gained some poundage over the years, approximately 10 pounds. And
while I have enjoyed every last bottle of Spotted Cow and every
single loaf of spicy cheesy bread, I felt my final year of college
was the time to make a change, if in no other form than light
beer.

Students on the UW-Madison campus this summer find themselves
yelling over the sound of jackhammers and walking around temporary
fences seemingly everywhere they go. As they ponder whether it's
worth the investment to purchase their own hard hat, they ask,
""What is all this construction about?""

Note to readers: Refer back to this column after celebrating your
Halloween weekend. You may indeed find these scenarios eerily
familiar. Madison Freakfest does have the tendency to create such a
feeling.

The incidences of bullying against and suicide among LGBT youth has
been brought to the forefront of media coverage in the past few
weeks, and though this prominence will hopefully lead to more
awareness and community support, it is worrisome to note the
decline in coverage after these events took place.

The ongoing debate over the ultimate college experience
continues to inspire death matches across campus. Badgers
throughout Madison argue and defend the seemingly rat-infested pit
that is Witte or the first-class, ritzy hotel that is Smith (where
are the bell men?) against the students who find comfort in the
small, almost hobbit-hole homes that make up the Lakeshore
neighborhood.
