With the presidential election looming in the not-so-distant future, several key issues remain effervescent within the news. Clearly, headlines regarding the economy are inescapable, and abortion, healthcare and gay marriage ride just behind in its wake. At the same time, international policy, an arena that also demands much attention, garners its share of media coverage. And with the Middle East as politically charged as ever, we look to our fearless leader, our commander-in-chief, el presidente, to guide us past murky waters.

Beds. Bunk beds. Like in the dorms. Ew.

A little over a year ago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison opened up a new office in Shanghai to help further its reputation and to establish more research and business associations. To help open up the office in Shanghai, which is officially called the “UW-Madison Shanghai Innovation Office,” Chancellor David Ward joined with a delegation that included local Chinese officials and Wisconsin business representatives; some of these included the representatives of major multinational corporations such as Promega and Abbott Labs. A few months ago, Abbott Labs pleaded guilty to knowingly selling inappropriate and subsequently harmful medication to elderly people in the U.S.; they are also paying a mammoth $1.6 billion fine.

Wake up early enough to pre-game

Music festivals that require me to camp quickly fall into a pattern—wake up with the sun, party, pass out, repeat—so let me save you from my sweaty soliloquy surrounding waking and fast forward to the Forest’s finest. (Oh em gee, alliteration overload, sorry not sorry.)

No player encompassed what football fans love about the game more than Tiaina Seau, Jr.

So I’m sitting here on Sunday afternoon, trying to rehydrate after a night spent with generous and thirsty alumni from my favorite student organization, eating Spongebob Mac n’ Cheese and watching “Eat, Pray, Love.” Typical.

Record Store Day always reminds me of my love for physical media, and this year was no exception. One of the best parts about the event is all of the singles that would otherwise not be released. Be it the Warner’s “Side by Side” series or a heart-shaped Neon Trees single. All of the songs are classics and most feature my favorite part of the single: the B-side.

I don’t think there’s anybody who would disagree that UW-Madison has earned a strong progressive reputation. That is why I think the university’s continuing bad business practices, particularly involving alleged adidas’ improper compensation practicses, is especially damaging to its reputation.

There is nothing quite like living in a residence hall to keep you up until 5 a.m. writing a paper, consequently forever screwing up your sleep cycle.

Surrounded by an endless expanse of sand, you wake up in a foreign world with only a shimmering mountaintop looming ominously in the distance. Devoid of options, you begin your journey towards a goal that could mark either a sanctuary or a false hope. Suddenly, a bright figure appears in the distance.

As spring break drew ever closer, a dark, dreary prospect loomed ahead of me. What I’m referring to is not my failure to get my shit together and plan an unforgettable road trip with my homies to, say, the Grand Canyon or wine country. No, what I’m alluding to is the fact that upon returning to my childhood residence I would be forced to take baths for a solid week. Let me repeat—I would have to take baths for a week straight.

Every member of The Daily Cardinal, past or present, felt the loss of former reporter and campus editor Anthony Shadid, but few more so than one small office “brigade” from the late 1980s.

This week, after yet another ratings battle with the Motion Picture Association of America, Harvey Weinstein finally had enough. In 2010 Weinstein was able to convince the MPAA to overturn its NC-17 rating for the Ryan Gosling/Michelle Williams relationship drama “Blue Valentine” when the ratings board got up in arms over a scene of Gosling performing oral sex. This year the board would not budge on its decision to brand the documentary “Bully” with a cursed “R” rating for “some language,” deflating the hopes of many that the documentary could be a rallying point for raising awareness of the horrors of relentless adolescent harassment among kids themselves. One teenage bullying victim even started a petition for a PG-13 rating on Change.org which has already racked up almost half a million signatures.

People are often surprised when I tell them I am in a fraternity. I joined Delta Upsilon my freshman year and lived in the house last year, but I am no frat star. In the past two years, I’ve been to maybe three DU events, however I am close to active and inactive members. Considering I am a non-white member of an allegedly racist fraternity, I can speak to last week’s racial incident with some clarity. There are three things that I am sure of: excessively punishing DU is a mistake, disciplining the individuals involved needs to be firm and fair and DU’s proximity to the end of Frances Street is a factor that has been ignored.

When the sun comes out prematurely, and it is 50-plus degrees for multiple days in a row, Madison’s citizens undergo a change. Rising out of their winter parkas and crew neck sweatshirts, people from all corners of campus venture over to the Memorial Union Terrace to soak in the sun’s rays.

Hipster spring break is finally over. Brightly colored lens-less glasses from the night before—a riotous combination of the culminating night of South by Southwest and the city of Austin’s celebration of St. Patrick’s Day—have been traded out for oversized shades as everybody in the Austin airport sulks behind laptop screens and tall cups of coffee, disappointed that the party is over. Like kids waiting to be picked up by their parents at the end of summer camp.
