OK, so I know that being a cable-less person in college may render me incapable to complain about the onslaught of political ads being thrown my way, but believe me, those people are cree-ay-tive with their marketing even without the use of TV, as many of you—OK probably all of you—know all too well.

An old friend of mine visited me recently. We have known each other since we were 10 years old and were friends all throughout our adolescence. As awkward, unfortunate looking middle schoolers, we never considered each other as more than friends. But as we got older, and I got a decent haircut and he got more muscular, that changed. A casual flirtation developed between us, but because we attended different schools, issues of timing and different boyfriends and girlfriends prevented it from escalating further.

School seminars are devoted to preventing bullying, as is extensive news coverage and several educational films. Still, it persists in spite of all of the condemnation it receives. UW-Madison recently conducted a study in which researchers taught a computer to scan the social networking site Twitter to identify bullying-related tweets. About 15,000 of them were tied to bullying. As seen in many cases today, though bullying used to be a face-to-face encounter, it is now digitized and depersonalized. The thing that keeps most people from bullying, the reason why they don’t terrorize and taunt others at will, is an inability to face their victims. Social networking takes this barrier completely away from the situation and allows for bullying to take place from behind a curtain.

As long as sports have been around, there has been a “chicken or the egg” type argument about who really makes a team, the players or the coaches. Is it the coaches’ preparation, motivation and schemes that set up a team for victory, or does on-the-field talent truly trump all else?

What was the last book you didn’t finish? Come now: you’re not all perfect little literature angels heralding the merits of the written word. Was it a class reading? Was it a book for recreation? As summer winds down and us kids get back into the swing of school and independence (a.k.a. eating cereal for dinner), let us look forward to the emotional rollercoaster that is visiting home. Whether you’re from the valleys of Utah and are the 27th love child of a man named Josiah or the grad from Laguna High who never made it to the screen of MTV’s Laguna Beach (even though you totally hooked up with Jason—what gives?), going home is a real, well, special trip.

Every once in a while a comic gets it right. I’m talking about having good characters, an entertaining plot and good artwork. While there are a number of comics out right now that fit one or two of those criteria, DC Comics’ “The Shade” is my favorite example that fits all three.
