I have a therapist. I’ve never felt completely confident admitting that fact to people, even my immediate family. Now, however, I think it’s important, particularly for university students, to know that you are not alone in fighting your mental health problems. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in every four Americans will experience a mental health condition at least once in their life. It’s also important to know that anyone can be effected by a mental health problem. Abraham Lincoln, Isaac Newton, Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill, Terry Bradshaw, Princess Diana, Sheryl Crow, Jim Carrey, Ashley Judd, J.K. Rowling, Heath Ledger and, most recently, Robin Williams all suffered from mental health problems. It is not simply a poor person’s problem or a drug user’s problem.

Yes, I’m sure.), then they’ll understand the obsession with Urban Dictionary that sprang in the wake of the film’s success. One of the funniest scenes shows one of Steve Carell’s coworkers assuring him he’s not missing out on sex because life is about love, not the “Cincinnati Bow Tie” or the “Dirty Sanchez.”

Daystar Peterson, better known by stage names Tory Lanez and Argentina Fargo, is a rapper from Ontario, Canada who has been emerging in a big way with his high-pitched singing and heavy rap-flow. Lanez performed in front of a small, yet eager, crowd at The Frequency Monday night.

It was a chilly night in Madison, Wis., a perfect evening for hockey. The Badgers were honoring the seniors that had donned the red and white for the past four years. The seniors’ families were in town and emotions filled the LaBahn Arena as each player was announced.

The recent attack of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo at the hands of religious fanatics has sent many into a frenzy extolling the merits of a free press. That so many of us regard the right to an open press as a fundamental tenet of society has been laid bare in our incredulity at those who would extinguish the torch of free expression and dictate the parameters of permissible thought. In their march through Paris in the wake of the attack, a myriad of the world’s leaders affirmed that those who value liberty over tyranny would not submit to the demands of terrorists.

The transition from a relaxing winter break back into the seemingly indefinite schedule of constant work and exhaustion is never a simple task. As I am a naïve freshman this year, I originally predicted the four weeks spanning from Christmas through mid-January to be far too short of a break. After all, I had been in college for an entire semester, dragging myself out of bed to my 9:55 a.m. classes, always worried if my schedule would overlap with that of the custodians who cleaned my bathroom for me every day in my residence hall, having to pick out what vegetables would go in my omelet at Gordon’s, so on and so on. In my mind, one month would simply not be enough time to recover from all of these stressful freshmen woes.

After watching the Nov. 22 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” I was curious to see if the hilarious and catchy skit “Back Home Baller” was true to Thanksgiving break (pause reading here if you have not seen the video and watch it). As a freshman, I had always watched my older sister come back from college with stories and leave with leftovers. In the SNL skit the lyrics say, “I’m a back home baller, if I want something I just holler. I do what I want and I get what I want cause my parents miss their daughter!” I wondered if the situation would be the same for my Thanksgiving break.

Nick Cave has never really been himself. In all his oeuvre, he’s always played the role of observational poet; his work, while sometimes intensely personal, is always marked by the unmistakable sense of voyeurism, of looking in at another’s life. From The Bad Seeds’ first venomous 1983 recording of Leonard Cohen’s “Avalanche” to the metatextual eeriness of 2013’s “Finishing Jubilee Street,” he has lived the necessary lie of the poet. Even his frequent artistic self-presentation, a product of English post-punk aesthetics and Southern gothic hellfire, contradicts the reality of his Melbourne upbringing.

This Saturday marks the beginning of the gun deer season in Wisconsin. Just as they do every year, thousands of hunters will put on their blaze orange and flood the state’s forests, marshes and other natural areas as a part of a tradition that spans centuries. At the same time, many people in Wisconsin and around the country will voice their disdain for the practice which they view as barbaric and backward in an era where most are not killing for sustenance. To be honest, I probably share many of the same political views held by those who protest hunting, and yet, every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, I am sitting in a box, in the middle of a field, wearing the aforementioned blaze orange, hunting. Can you say cognitive dissonance? So, I want to take this opportunity to explain why I go hunting, and why it means so much to me.

Clive Barker once said that horror fiction shows us that the control we believe we have is purely illusory, and that every moment we teeter on chaos and oblivion. It’s a curious thing to say, but it makes you wonder. Where did the need to scare come from? What caused the birth of horror literature? What would induce someone to wake up one day and concoct a milieu of elements designed to do nothing but inspire the existence of fear within the imagination of those who cross paths with it?
