Saturday's game against Ohio State was nothing short of
spectacular. From David Gilreath's 97-yard return to the near
demise of goal posts, the game had a palpable energy everyone was
high on. It's hard to go back to normalcy after an event like that,
so Daily Cardinal arts contributors present several songs that
embody the spirit of Saturday's game that will help to keep the
momentum going until this Saturday when we take down Iowa.

It is not too often that I actually drive my car around campus or
even drive my car in general. Most of the time it serves as a
resting place for leaves or something for snow to bury. It's just
another thing I inadvertently waste my money on. In high school I
actually got my driving privileges revoked due to the fact that I
totaled two cars in one year, racked up the occasional speeding
ticket and may or may not have caused some fender-benders. And yes,
in the best stern Dad voice I can imitate, it is a ""privilege to
operate a vehicle, not a right."" You would think after five years,
two speeding tickets and three cars, I would trust myself to drive,
but I don't entirely do yet, nor should anyone else.

When I left Sundance Cinemas last weekend, I was one excited film
nerd. I had the transcendental experience of a Friday matinee
viewing of ""The Social Network."" When I discussed the film
afterwards with my friends I encountered an opinion I've heard many
times before. I described the film as flawless, and a friend of
mine, who had not yet seen the film, told me that he highly doubted
that it was flawless and that the term ‘flawless' should be,
""reserved for like, ‘The Godfather' and ‘Star Wars' and
‘Chinatown' and that ilk."" This notion really irritated me, and
I'll tell you why.

This happens to me every fall. I follow baseball religiously from
the day pitchers and catchers report to spring training, through
the entire summer and into September. But then the first NFL Sunday
rolls around and my interest drops right off the table.

Hollywood really doesn't know what to do with film noir anymore.
Not since 1997's ""L.A. Confidential"" has there been a truly
successful major studio film noir effort. Instead, the genre has
been littered with missteps such as ""The Good German"" and ""The
Black Dahlia,"" forcing fans to go elsewhere for their regular
dosage of sardonic gumshoe protagonists embroiled in sleazy,
sensual plotlines. Film noir has flourished in independent and
foreign cinema, with films like Rian Johnson's ""Brick"" and the
Korean drama ""Mother"" earning considerable critical success.
Recently released crime thriller ""Winter's Bone"" tries to
continue this indie film noir trend, and while it succeeds on
several levels, it fails to inject the same freshness into its
conceit.

I remember exactly what kind of kid I was before coming to
college. Thoughts of parties, beer and women constantly floated
through my head in the days leading up to move-in. Picture a young
Van Wilder, but paler. Back then, I was a mere 120 lbs of lean,
mean partying potential.

I know I'm jumping the first-anniversary gun or maybe just
missing the farewell boat by the better part of a year, but a
career of such transforming polarizations is beginning to complete
its form for me. Michael Jackson transcended cultural and artistic
barriers, which has been conflicting a large majority of the
general populace since the beginning of his career. Reflecting on
the last year, the last pieces of his career have fallen securely
into a safe place for him, as his death has prompted a 360-degree
turn among fans. Just a year ago, most saw him as an alleged
pedophile who had become more deformed than the zombies in his
""Thriller"" video from 30 years ago. However now that he has
passed, somehow the dark secrets in his closet are forgotten
entirely while everybody stands in awe of the glistening garments
that masked his vices and drew roaring applause throughout his
career.

Scatter-shot with casual pubs, inventive restaurants and myriad
small shops, the near-east side's Williamson St. is one that a
resident may never have to leave. From the New Age shops and yoga
studios to the hardware stores and plumbers that line the
well-traveled road, locals can find anything they need or want on
Willy's short ten-block run.

Ya casi hemos llegado. El punto medio del año. La semana para

en cuál nos olvidamos de la tarea, los exámenes y la universidad.

Never in my life can I remember so much focus from the sports
world on hockey than during the Vancouver Olympics. I was
completely hooked, leaving games on in my apartment whenever I was
home, whether it be the preliminary round or the gold-medal game.
People I knew, who ranged from casual hockey fans to apathetic
ones, became invested. The national media turned its focus away
from college basketball, the NBA and the NFL offseason to the
U.S.-Canada gold-medal game. The sport could not have asked for a
better showcase.

Will he or won't he? This question usually indicates one of two
things around these parts: Either it is the NFL offseason or we are
approaching an election of some sort. Brett Favre and former
Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson could easily be cousins. Both have
been transplanted only to become Wisconsin golden boys. Both have
retired, but both have had to consider whether they are happy with
that status several times. Both can ""still play."" Perhaps most
significantly at this point, both are holding their respective
organizations in suspense while they ponder their futures.

A large part of making either successful or appealing music
today is figuring out how far away you want to keep listeners while
still providing them with empathetic emotion or sentiment to grasp.
From ambience to pop, today's music requires either hidden,
artistic accessibility or transparent pop sensibilities. Phantogram
can be seen as hanging in perfect balance between an open sound
like Chairlift or the xx and the abrasive, sometimes confusing
sounds of Hot Chip or of Montreal.

As the cliché goes, the whole is often more than the sum of its
parts. We as humans are not our biochemistry, a maze of neurons or
our limbs. In art, the gestalt is the ultimate goal, the pinnacle
of artistic vision. Pit Er Pat's latest release sits at the
opposite end of the spectrum. At times truly endearing and mature,
and at others hypnotically tiresome, The Flexible
Entertainer fails to appropriately coagulate into any sort of
discernable whole.

Since the infamous ""wardrobe malfunction"" in 2004, there has
been a significant shift in the direction of Super Bowl halftime
performances. The trend is obvious in the six years since: Paul
McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty and the
Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, and now the Who. Take your choice
of adjectives: careful, cautious, conservative, symbolic.
