It's no secret: UW-Madison attracts such a broad and diverse
array of collegiate students for its promising educational
opportunities, incredible international achievements, indelible
sports legacy and a perfect city to spend four or five years.
However, the same fair city that attracts thousands of college
applicants every year is attracting other, less appealing
aspects—namely growing crime and safety concerns.

Nothing about ""Hunger"" is easy to watch. The move is
unforgiving, brutal and frustrating. It contains very little
dialogue, and many scenes will make you want to avert your eyes.
But don't look away. It's worth it.

Gregor Jordan's ""The Informers"" is a new window into the world
that Bret Easton Ellis has been creating since the publication of
""Less Than Zero"" in 1985. It is a world of recurring and
interchangeable characters, extravagant wealth and nihilistic
depravity. This can be seen in the film adaptation of his novel
""American Psycho,"" which augments the text nicely, largely due to
an impressive performance by Christian Bale, and has become a
unique reference point for Ellis, who comments on the movie version
in his quasi-autobiographical ""Lunar Park."" The film version of
""The Informers,"" however, has been ravaged in reviews thus far.
Although it is certainly not a great film—it is mediocre—I feel
that some of these critics might have missed the point.

Time and again we encounter situations in which facts are not
completely revealed nor explained, especially in the field of
science. From misconceptions about vaccines causing autism, to
blaming high fructose corn syrup for causing obesity and diabetes,
those who advocate for a cause often have not investigated the
scientific facts pertaining to the topic. A piece of advice to all:
know your topic before running with it, particularly when the topic
is scientifically based and you wish to debate it with someone in
the sciences. Today, I will elucidate the most common
misconceptions surrounding the topic of high-fructose corn syrup.
For background knowledge: sucrose, fructose and glucose are all
forms of sugar I mention in this article.

One important point can sometimes be lost amid discussions about
the Associated Students of Madison: that the organization has
significant control over $2.5 million in student fees.

At a trim 80 minutes, ""Wendy and Lucy"" is as slender and
simple as it is dense and stunning. For a film that's pretty
straightforward about the emotions it's trying to stir, ""Wendy and
Lucy"" deserves the highest compliment: It's a really potent punch
to the gut. It marries big-time affectivity with intellectual
abstraction; that is, if it doesn't make you too miserable to think
afterward.

Last Saturday was national Record Store Day. I'm only moderately
ashamed to admit that I didn't patronize any of the local record
stores. Although I am in love with some romantic ideal of what
record stores are like (probably due to repeated viewings of ""High
Fidelity""), I couldn't tell you the last time I bought an album
from a record store. It's simple, really. I don't have money to buy
music. And while that might stop me from getting music at record
stores, it doesn't stop me from getting music.

After Michael Jordan left the NBA for a second time following
his last championship in 1998, many feared the league might face an
identity crisis without its iconic superstar. They were correct;
the league has seen a notable decrease in popularity over the past
decade. Jordan's brilliant career is far behind us, but the league
could still boost its popularity by considering some changes in
format.

Things are finally looking up. The Dow Jones Industrial is up
over eight percent the past month, erasing much of the slide that
occurred at the end of January and continued through February. With
such an increase, there is little doubt that investments will
decline any time soon. States are receiving money from President
Obama's bailout bill, and pretty soon, private investors will be
taking up assets as toxic as nuclear waste and turning a profit
from them. The country has very nearly pulled itself out of the
recession and the world will soon follow.

State Rep. Cory Mason, D-Racine, recently introduced an
amendment to the state constitution that enfranchises 17-year-olds,
giving them the right to vote in both state and local elections.
The impetus behind this amendment is to stimulate voting among
young people.

Perhaps pop music has never been a hotbed of careful, deep
lyrics. But the recent glut of ridiculous, shallow bullshit being
passed off for lyrics cannot go unmentioned.

I was skeptical when the bracket came out. But after the first
couple of rounds, you have to admit that the NCAA men's basketball
selection committee knew what they were doing then they put
together this year's field of 65 contenders.

Cursive's breakout album, 2003's The Ugly Organ, marked a stark
change in approach from their debut, 1997's Such Blinding Stars for
Starving Eyes. The manic instrumentation beneath frantic wails of
old became a more controlled chaos, focused on thematic elements
and presentation as much as angst and rebellion. Their new release,
Mama, I'm Swollen, marks the farthest point from their beginning
yet. At times droning, Mama misses the mark Cursive had established
for themselves as the darlings of literate post-hardcore.

Something scary happened while I was waiting in line outside
Madison's. My friend Erik just started bouncing at Madison's, so a
couple friends and I decided to check it out.
