Stanislas Wawrinka’s run through this year’s Australian Open was impressive and included a dramatic, five-set win over defending champion Novak Djokovic. Wawrinka fought through heat, and a stacked slate of opponents in order to win the tournament. His final win even came against world No. 1, Rafael Nadal.

Next week most Americans will likely gather with family and friends to celebrate the annual thanks-giving ritual critical to American culture and tradition: Thanksgiving. The importance of Thanksgiving is being devalued, though, because a certain commercial trend gaining prominence—the ever-famous Black Friday. It is important to retain some sacred values in our society, and Thanksgiving fills that role—it is above both religious and ethnic heritage and can be embraced by all. Thanksgiving’s value is priceless and needs to be cherished. As a society we need to pull back our obsession with Black Friday and rethink our relationship with Thanksgiving.

It seems to be a sick, dramatic irony that the protesting proponents for a higher minimum wage, or a “living wage” as the left has now incongruously deemed it, are acting in accordance with principles of ritualistic self-sacrifice. Minimum wage laws destroy low-skilled jobs and hurt the very economic class the “do-gooders” are trying to save. The very real efforts of these practitioners of self-immolation give metaphorical credence to the eternal aphorism “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” While unfortunate, much of progressive history has been steeped with racist and sexist policy. From eugenics advocacy, race-based abortion advancement and defending Jim Crow laws, to special legislation purporting that women must work fewer hours because they were responsible for bearing future generations (and thus were collective property), well-meaning progressives seem to be eternally on the wrong side of history. This time is no different. The persistent push for increasing minimum wage laws hurts low-skilled laborers who are more represented in the lower income brackets.

Hey, it’s March Madness! The one time of the year where everyone becomes a manic basketball fan because low-stakes gambling and day drinking are involved! If you give a shit (you shouldn’t), I’m picking Miami to win it all. I’m definitely one of those insufferable people that will brag about what great foresight I have to make a correct pick. It’s always great to say, “See, I told you guys South Dakota State would beat Michigan. Just call me Nostradamus.”

A local food policy committee defined Wednesday a list of priority health goals for Madison in 2013, including increasing opportunities for residents to garden on public lands.

I decided to watch the Oscars Sunday and thought they started at 7 rather than 7:30 p.m. This was a brutal mistake, as I was subjected to catch most of the Red Carpet show, which made me want to tear my eyeballs out. I guess the consensus was that Jennifer Lawrence was the best dressed. That’s the same Jennifer Lawrence who later tripped over her mountain of a dress and faceplanted on the steps when she accepted her Best Actress award, perfectly illustrating the absurdity of the Red Carpet show. If I’m ever invited to the Oscars, I’m going to show up in a T-shirt and jeans just to lampoon the Red Carpet show. And then when the TV host asks me, “Who are you wearing? Dior? Armani?” I’d be all like, “The hell if I know. Probably some 10-year-old kid from a sweatshop in Indonesia.”

Thanksgiving is almost here, but let’s be real, despite the savory qualities of grandma’s homemade pumpkin pie, for many people, T-giving is just a carbo-loading pregame for the real event: Black Friday.

The Second City, a premier comedy troupe based in Chicago, is a verified comedian-machine. With the likes of Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, John Belushi and Mike Myers as alumni, their tendency to produce top-of-the-line comedians is undeniable. On March 24, the current members of Second City took the stage at the Overture Center with their Laugh Out Loud tour, and gave audiences a glimpse into the future of comedy.

I am currently sitting in my bedroom, staring out the window
wondering a few things. First, why is there no snow on the
ground? I want a white fluffy winter wonderland, not that
unappealingly grey stage between autumn colors and wintery
awesomeness. Second, why is it dark at 4:45 p.m.? I don’t know
why this surprises me so much every year, but I also don’t know why
daylight saving time can’t be a permanent change. And third, can I
get out of this last week of school if I jump out the window and
break my legs?

Well people, it’s officially December. I’ve recently developed a
love/hate relationship with this month, and I can’t decide if I
should be excited or not. We college students get to spend the bulk
of it furiously studying for finals and catching up on a semester’s
worth of work we really shouldn’t have gotten behind in. But when
that’s all over, we’re rewarded with a trip home, CHRISTMAS and a
solid month of break.

Until recently, the Associated Students of Madison's bafflingly
unorganized, unaccountable and bureaucratic funding system could
justifiably be compared to a wild game of Monopoly with student
segregated fees. This year, however, we were pleased to see ASM
make some refreshing and efficient changes when it came to getting
things done.

I'll be the first to admit, I can't define diversity. Is it about
skin color, gender identity, class status, religion or all the
above? Your guess is as good as mine.

There are many different reasons why college students engage in
sexual behavior. Reasons like love, pleasure and fun are all great
answers, but what if I had a better incentive for you. Why should
college students be having even more safe sex? Because you, yes,
even you who feels awkward walking out of the store carrying a box
of condoms, can still do some good in this world.

Looking out the window and watching the snow circle to the
already-white ground invites me to blissfully reminisce about the
sense of triumph, giddiness and playfulness last year's snowday
created. Like yesterday, I felt like a kid again. And judging by

Rebels have always been a favorite of mine. They cannot be
ignored, whether it's the teenager deliberately staying out past
curfew or the revolutionary hero. We've got Martin Luther King Jr.,
Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, James Dean, Gandhi, Emiliano Zapata,
oldies like George Washington and Lewis and Clark, and
contemporaries like Lady Gaga. The rebel mindset incorporates
defiance, stubbornness and a dose of crazy, but most importantly, a
vision. And to reference the popular Apple ad that raises a glass
to the ""round pegs in square holes,"" the rebels are the ones who
push the envelope and end up changing the world, just because they
think they can.
