It’s hard to believe an album of two banjos, one voice and no other instruments could keep a listener captivated for its 45-minute endurance, but musical duo Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn make it look effortless on their first self-titled album, Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn. The married couple’s first collaboration together combines Washurn’s traditional folk stylings with Fleck’s Grammy-winning crossover genres—diffusing the banjo into jazz, blues, classical and funk. The track list contains both original pieces and unique covers and classics.

King Tuff (real name: Kyle Thomas) doesn’t hide behind any autobiographical ambiguities on Black Moon Spell. In fact, he’s pretty forward about who he is and what he wants to do. In “Madness,” he declares his raison d’être in traditional Alice Cooper fashion: “King Tuff is my name/I got madness in my brain/Pleased to meet ya/I’m gonna eat ya/because I’m batshit insane!” Nor does he hide where he comes from; echoing Springsteenian mantras, Tuff declares in “Black Holes in Stereo”: “I learned more working at the record store than I ever did in high school.”

On Satruday night I humored my 20-year-old housemates and went to a childish little apartment party at La Ville. It was worth it to see the smiles on their little faces as they spastically gyrated on the carpeted dance floor with their girlish, baby-faced companions. But I stuck out like a sore thumb, a man among boys. And men go to the bars.

College football season is in full swing, which means the upsets have started rolling in like a rising tide, but not a Crimson Tide (screw you Alabama). Last Saturday saw four ranked teams bite the dust. Georgia, USC, Virginia Tech and Louisville.

As a freshman, I attended a trio of shows at what is now called Shannon Hall, packed tight into the chilled and straightened annals of February and March: the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (Feb. 4, 2012), Gaelic Storm (Feb. 17, 2012) and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones (March 1, 2012). Three acts so wholly dissimilar that, upon reflection, it seemed absurd that (as a student) I was afforded the opportunity to see them all under one roof. For cheap! Such an experience (in retrospect) was not to be taken lightly.

After four unbearably long years, World Cup season returns and is coming to its spiritual home in Brazil. To preview this month-long celebration, here are my picks for what to expect at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. For each category, I first give an answer that is more on the obvious side, followed by a not-so-obvious answer that significantly less people are talking about. Finally, I give my predicted winner and break down why I see them hoisting the trophy at the Maracanã in Rio De Janeiro July 13.

On April 24, Las Vegas producer Justin “3LAU” Blau performed for a sold-out Segredo’s nightclub. This was his first show in Madison since rocking the Orpheum in October the same night as Freakfest, in the midst of State Street’s costumed calamity. After hearing the hype from all corners of Madison’s social spectrum from fall until now, in addition to several hours spent browsing SoundCloud, I knew I couldn’t afford to miss 3LAU again.

The word “organic” is a buzzword in the whole foods/go natural movement. Prior to my interview with Erin Silva, associate director for the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems, I had a narrow definition of what “organic” meant. I thought it was just food grown without pesticides typically found at places like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and the farmer’s market.
