It is spring 2027 and after 20 years of career and family
building, I find myself back at UW-Madison for the first time in
more than 15 years. Having successfully avoided calls and mail from
the alumni association for years, my badger-alum husband finally
convinced me to at least take a look around. It had been years
since I visited, and after picking up a map and information
pamphlet at the visitor center, my husband, two kids and I set out
to explore. We look around, searching for any familiar
landmark.

Some people just love winter. They sled on lunch trays, play a
little ice hockey and build snowmen bearing a resemblance to Bucky
Badger. They love snowball fights. They even enjoy bundling up to
walk to class when it is minus 10 degrees. Yet somehow, they make
you want to shove them into a snow bank.

It could be the girl frantically scribbling down notes next to
you in lecture. It could be the bundled-up couple holding hands
walking through Library Mall. It could even be your TA. Do you
think you could really tell if someone starred in Internet
pornography? How would you know?

UW-Madison plays host to nearly 4,000 international students
each semester, and during the bone-chilling winters, it is easy to
wonder why these students ever wanted to come to Madison.
(12/08/05 6:00am)
Winter for many students at UW-Madison does not always bring to
mind such fond, childlike activities like sledding and building
snowmen. Rather, students see the energy bills piling up in their
own version of snowballs.

Sally hugged goodbye to her teary-eyed parents and watched their
red minivan drive off down the street. It was her first time away
from her small town on her own and she wanted her first experience
at this new place to be truly meaningful. Suddenly, she was filled
with questions, \Will I look like a freshman because I don't know
all the words to ""On Wisconsin,"" even though most of the
upperclassmen don't either? Will I survive complete freedom and
independence while overindulging in heavy underage drinking?"" So
Sally did what any young UW-Madison student does when faced with
fear: she got drunk.

Two weeks ago, Andy Lathrop, a UW-Madison sophomore from
Menasha, Wis., went missing in Hakodate, Japan. Lathrop was last
heard from Aug. 15 before he failed to meet his friend, Ariel
Smoke, at the train station where the two were to catch a train to
Tokyo so they could fly home to the states.

In keeping with its fellow Big Ten schools, UW-Madison offers a
variety of religious options. However, unlike some smaller in-state
schools, like UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison's diversity equips students
to have a more open dialogue regarding religious issues.
(04/13/05 6:00am)
Incoming students may soon confront diversity issues in a way no
current student has if Associated Students of Madison continues its
work toward implementing Plan 2008.

Many consider UW-Madison to be a \liberal"" school, possibly
leading some to consider the campus to be non-religious as well.
Nevertheless, what makes UW-Madison different from smaller,
religious-oriented schools like Edgewood College is that UW-Madison
does not have an official religion, but rather offers the
opportunity to explore many.
(04/11/05 6:00am)
When students get to college, some continue to attend church,
some become non-religious, and others find a new faith altogether.
Ultimately, the experiences students have in college affect their
faith for the rest of their lives.
