It might be the giving season, but with the murk of final exams,
papers and snow weighing down on every student, it sure doesn't
feel like it. People don't need to say what they're thinking; their
actions say it all:

115 days over its allotted time to become law, state Sen. Mark
Miller, D-Monona, and state Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Madison, have
removed roughly half of the nonfiscal items from this year's budget
proposal to make it more palatable from a bipartisan perspective.
As the chairs of the Joint Committee on Finance, Miller and Pocan

Madison Property Management manages significantly more downtown
Madison units than any other management company and has had
thousands of very happy residents over the past 20 years in
business. Many of the units managed by MPM are older homes and
flats that require extra attention and pose unique challenges
relative to utility charges and the allocation between landlord and
tenant. The vocal minority who are displeased with their
interactions with MPM will always speak louder than the nonvocal
majority with nothing but praise. MPM prides itself on treating all
tenants fairly and with respect. We respond to and investigate each
and every complaint or issue raised by our tenants. Unfortunately,
as with any type of business, mistakes are made, and when they
occur, MPM acknowledges the mistake and learns from it. Every year
a significant portion of our residents are so satisfied with their
experience that they choose to renew their lease for another year
or transfer to a different property managed by MPM. This renewal
and transfer rate is the true measure of tenant
satisfaction.

As children, we were shielded from the outside world. Niether
Barney nor the Carebears talked much about freebasing. There was no
abortion clinic on Sesame Street. One of the most poignant moments
in The Things We Lost in the Fire"" occurs when children are
confronted with drug addiction, because in the heart of a drug
addict is an adult that wishes to return to the crib or to the
womb. But as any addict will tell you, achieving that goal isn't
possible for long, (why else would they call it chasing?) and
eventually reality hits harder than it ever has before.

Many teams' hopes for a national title vanished last weekend
after another crazy weekend in college football. For the third
straight week, two teams in the top five lost and shook up the
polls significantly. First, the No. 1 LSU Tigers lost to Kentucky
in triple overtime, and then the No. 2 Cal Golden Bears were upset
at home by Oregon State. For the first time in college football
history, the top two teams in the country lost in the same weekend.
Overall, the weekend was a disappointment for many colleges around
the country.

Some people just love winter. They sled on lunch trays, play a
little ice hockey and build snowmen bearing a resemblance to Bucky
Badger. They love snowball fights. They even enjoy bundling up to
walk to class when it is minus 10 degrees. Yet somehow, they make
you want to shove them into a snow bank.

In the newest film adaptation of \The Phantom of the Opera,""
director Joel Schumacher takes on the daunting task of turning the

spectacular production.
