A newfound love for the campus' other union

More often than not, Union South is not recognized as anything more than \the other Union"" at UW-Madison, taking the back burner to Memorial Union. I know many students who have been there only a handful of times, describing it as ""that place where I got my student I.D. picture taken freshman year"" or ""the building with the bowling alley.""

However, I want to dispel this notion of Union South's inferiority and give it the recognition that it deserves-at least as far as breakfast is concerned.

The Red Oak Grill, which is somewhat similar to Der Rathskeller, features one of the best breakfasts I have come across in Madison in regard to not only food, but service and atmosphere as well.

My empty stomach first led me to the Red Oak Grill after an unbearably early psychology class. Once I looked over the extensive breakfast selection, which included a la carte items and bakery goods as well as breakfast specials ranging from $2 to $5 and omelets costing between $4 and $5, I decided on two scrambled eggs and ham.

I am pretty particular with my scrambled eggs because I don't like them runny, but I am not a fan of them being overcooked and dried out. A happy medium must be achieved and the cooks at the Red Oak Grill struck this perfect balance. The two salty slices of ham on the side really added to the eggs' tastiness.

However, if you are not really an egg person, I have also eaten the french toast and would recommend this as well. It is offered a la carte or as part of a breakfast special and is made with slices of extremely soft white bread and comes with a side of Mrs. Butterworth's maple syrup. However, if you are a fan of sweeter tasting french toast (like myself) you may be somewhat disappointed. I really think the batter could use a dash of cinnamon or vanilla to give it just a little more flavor.

The bacon I ordered was also amazing if you prefer bacon with a chewier texture. However, if you like your bacon extra crispy, I would definitely notify the cooks.

One reason I prefer eating breakfast here as opposed to Der Rathskeller is because the food is brought to your table when ready. It usually comes out in a matter of minutes with a napkin and necessary utensils all laid out for you.

The general atmosphere is also more uplifting in that many tables are situated next to bright large windows overlooking Johnson Street, whereas at Memorial Union's Der Rathskeller the lighting is dimmer and there are fewer windows.

Breakfast fare is also more affordable at Union South compared to downtown restaurants like the Sunroom Cafe, and the service is much quicker, making it a great place to pick up a bite to eat in between classes.

For those of you who are like me and have only stepped foot in Union South for a student I.D., I encourage you all to think again and check out the Red Oak Grill at least once. Besides, nothing beats a cheap, piping hot breakfast amidst a cold a blustery fall day.
