The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating whether Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala, D-Madison, and Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen, R-Waukesha, accepted campaign dollars in exchange for political favors, according to reports in The Capital Times and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Several lobbyists told the Journal Sentinel that DOJ officers had approached them, asking about Chvala's fund-raising methods.
One lobbyist told The Capital Times that leaders of both legislative houses directed lobbyists to contribute money to particular representatives for favorable votes on legislation.
Aides for Chvala and Jensen denied reports of quid pro quo, calling the allegations false.
District attorneys Brian Blanchard of Dane County and E. Michael McCann of Milwaukee County are leading the investigation into bribery accusations, as well as reports of abuse of legislative caucuses.
