As Matt and Vince wrote about in their columns this week, college basketball reigns supreme at this juncture in the world of college sports—as it should. I've been to my fair share of NBA regular season and playoff games, but they do not even compare to the excitement and emotion of college basketball games.
It’s not a regular occurrence that an athletic department has—at its disposal, right in its own backyard—the type of coach and person Wisconsin women’s hockey head coach Mark Johnson currently is and has become since taking over the program in 2002 after his stint with the men’s hockey program. The Wisconsin athletic department had that luxury, and the women’s hockey program has not been the same since.
Coming off a successful series split against North Dakota last weekend, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (11-9-2 WCHA, 15-9-2 overall) knew it would be put to the test against No. 1 Minnesota (20-0-0, 26-0-0), winners of 32 straight contests. To say it simply, the Gophers did not disappoint. Minnesota completed the season sweep of the Badgers with 2-0 and 5-1 wins Friday and Sunday, respectively, at the LaBahn Arena. In the process, the Gophers broke the NCAA women’s hockey record of consecutive games won, previously set by Wisconsin in 2007 and again in 2011.
