After six finance committee representatives faced impeachment, none were removed

Six Student Services Finance Committee representatives faced impeachment Thursday, leaving some frustrated that the committee failed to amend its attendance policy in a hearing last month. None of those representatives, who had missed meetings for reasons ranging from exam conflicts to family deaths, were removed from the committee. SSFC recently voted to maintain its attendance policy in favor of a different policy that would have allowed representatives unlimited absences as long as they were excused. Under the current policy, representatives may miss 25 percent of SSFC meetings in a given month, for any reason.

Cross: Conversations on UW-Stevens Point proposal might extend “well into the fall semester”

To allow for greater discussion among the campus community, UW System President Ray Cross said Thursday that conversation on UW-Stevens Point’s controversial proposal to chop 13 humanities majors will continue next fall to allow for full shared governance engagement.

The new Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs will oversee the Wisconsin Union, the Division of Recreational Sports, University Health Services and the Division of Student Life, which will be led by the dean of students.

UW-Madison Dreamers create scholarship for DACA students

A group of UW-Madison students has taken advocating for undocumented students into their own hands. After becoming a registered organization in 2016 with the goal of providing support for the self-described Dreamers in the community, the Dreamers of UW-Madison released a scholarship application Tuesday for undocumented students for the fall 2018 semester.

New online course aims to guide potential entrepreneurs

Students and community members looking to start their own business can now take an online course from the Wisconsin School of Business to guide their way. The First Steps to Starting a Business course — offered free-of-charge through the Wisconsin Small Business Development Center — features four sections in which potential business owners will learn about topics ranging from key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, ways to communicate business ideas to others and an assessment of financial readiness.

UHS hires Mandarin-speaking counselor to better serve international students

University Health Services has hired a Mandarin-speaking mental health counselor in an effort to better relate to and serve international students on the UW-Madison campus. Wei-Chiao Hsu — who was born in Taiwan and received her Master’s in Counseling Psychology at UW-Madison — provides counseling in Mandarin and English for students struggling with concerns related to international transition, relationship difficulties, academic and career issues, grief and loss and mental illness.

UW-Madison students participate in nationwide sustainability, art project

A group of UW-Madison students are participating in a nationwide project aimed at creating beautiful pieces of jewelry, using sustainable and ethical practices. The Radical Jewelry Makeover draws attention to the fact that jewelry is often sourced from sacred land and developing countries in ways that exploit both the land and the people living on it.

UW System researchers will work to maximize the sustainable use of the Great Lakes for the growth of the Wisconsin economy and enhance the health of connecting ecosystems.

UW Sea Grant Institute announces 2.8 million in research funding

The UW-Madison Sea Grant Institute, which focuses on the preservation of the Great Lakes, announced Thursday a $2.8 million donation to fund research in the coming year. The institute awarded grants to 19 projects on eight different UW System campuses, as well as projects through the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, UW-Extension and the Wisconsin Historical Society. Almost 100 researchers, staff and students will be engaged in work funded by the institute, according to the program’s director of research Jennifer Hauxwell.

UW-Stevens Point may reconsider plans to axe majors after student protests

After student protests ensued at UW-Stevens Point, the university announced last week that a counterproposal is being drafted to address a controversial plan which would eliminate 13 humanities majors while adding or expanding 16 STEM programs at the school.

UW-Madison women’s health class celebrates 50th birthday this semester

Berquam announces departure from UW, encourages students to make the most of life

Dean of Students Lori Berquam will be leaving her position at UW-Madison in August to participate in a fellowship program. Berquam has worked with UW-Madison’s Division of Student Life since 2002 and has served as dean and chief student affairs officer since 2007. She has been undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and has a positive prognosis.
