Early successes face weekend tests

The Big Ten is all but guaranteed to not have a team in the new College Football Playoff (cue the muffled sobbing sound from the Midwest). More surprisingly, the SEC might not have a representative in the Playoff either this January.

After an exciting summer for soccer, highlighted by Brazil’s World Cup, some of you might be suffering from footie withdrawal, and might be interested in following the world’s game more seriously this season. Well, fear not, because this coming semester Lars and I are here to guide you through the ups and downs of the Premier League (or “the Prem” for short), and we’ll start this week with a guide to a league which is only three games into its 38-game season.
Week three of the 2014 college football season is a barren wasteland. Locally, Wisconsin is on a bye, and nationally, there’s just one game that features two Top 25 teams.
Playing on national television is not something a soccer team experiences very often. Especially a team as young as the Wisconsin Badgers, considering five freshmen started in each game this past weekend for Wisconsin.
The No. 4 ranked Badgers (5-0) gear up for their first home match of season as the host of the HotelRED Invitational Friday and Saturday in the UW Field House.
Coach Paula Wilkins and the Badgers are on a roll. Their 6-0 start is one of the best starts in Wisconsin history, and they’ve been winning in impressive fashion. Wisconsin’s last four wins have been shutouts in which they’ve scored three or more goals.
Badger athletics lost a close member of its family Tuesday afternoon, as the Wisconsin men’s hockey team issued a release announcing the death of former Badger hockey player Bob Suter. He was 57.
Your conference is bad, and you should feel bad.
Two games into his career as Wisconsin’s starting quarterback, Tanner McEvoy has managed to do his best Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde impersonation.

This past Saturday afternoon, when Marin Cilic rocketed a forehand winner down the line past a defeated Roger Federer to secure a spot in the U.S. Open men’s tennis final against Kei Nishikori, a stat popped onto the TV screen that made my jaw hit the floor.
After the Packers were walloped by Seattle last Thursday night, it seemed like an appropriate time for Wisconsin sports fans to take a step back and let out a prolonged sigh.
A tough pair of Georges sent the Badgers home from the east coast this weekend without a win.
The No. 15 Badgers (6-0) had momentum behind them as they headed to Washington this weekend for a pair of road games against quality opponents - the Washington Huskies (4-1) and the Portland Pilots (3-2).
