Alleged incident at Delta Upsilon house needs to be addressed by whole campus
By The Daily Cardinal Editorial Board | Mar. 25, 2012Last Thursday, The Daily Cardinal, Badger Herald, Wisconsin State Journal, Madison.com, UW-Madison and other news outlets broke headlines on a report detailing an unfortunate alleged racial incident against two black female students walking through frat row.
Alleged incident at Delta Upsilon highlights campus-wide issues
By David Ruiz | Mar. 25, 2012People are often surprised when I tell them I am in a fraternity. I joined Delta Upsilon my freshman year and lived in the house last year, but I am no frat star. In the past two years, I’ve been to maybe three DU events, however I am close to active and inactive members. Considering I am a non-white member of an allegedly racist fraternity, I can speak to last week’s racial incident with some clarity. There are three things that I am sure of: excessively punishing DU is a mistake, disciplining the individuals involved needs to be firm and fair and DU’s proximity to the end of Frances Street is a factor that has been ignored.
City modernization must preserve historical character
By Matthew Curry | Mar. 22, 2012I take great offense with the term “modernizing.” I keep hearing this term with every single proposed development plan for the city of Madison, especially in the 100 block of State Street. Though a development plan was just put on hold, I still agree that the city should modernize. However, I believe this should be done without destroying the overall character of the city.
Castle Doctrine needs a second look
By Kate Krebs | Mar. 21, 2012Last month, the killing of 17-year-old Treyvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. caused a national uproar over the laws that protect the man who murdered the teenager. Martin was shot on his way home from a convenience store without reason by George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watch leader. The teenager was armed with only iced tea and candy, yet Zimmerman may escape criminal charges for the murder. In fact, due to Florida’s twisted self-defense laws, Zimmerman wasn’t even arrested after he killed Martin.
GOP gas problems
By Anurag Mandalika | Mar. 20, 2012The GOP has been blaming President Obama for the high gas prices. But they should look at their supporters and lobby groups first to see the real problem.
Latest recall will only hurt Wisconsin
By Ethan Safran | Mar. 20, 2012Numerous lawmakers throughout the state of Wisconsin will be up for recall this spring and summer. In about 60 days, two more names may—somehow—be added to that list.

Walker’s unethical staff under scrutiny
By David Ruiz | Mar. 18, 2012Two weeks ago, Gov. Scott Walker quietly announced the creation of a legal defense fund in response to a John Doe investigation that has resulted in the arrest of several formal Walker staff members. The probe started with allegations of misconduct among his staff while he was the Milwaukee County Executive and has since expanded to investigating his gubernatorial campaign. Because of the probe’s secrecy—hence,“John Doe”—the full extent of its inquiries aren’t known. But the charges already levied against Walker’s former staffers expose the morally vacuous environment that has followed Walker from Milwaukee to the state house.

Grothman’s bill promotes warped morality
By The Daily Cardinal Editorial Board | Mar. 15, 2012State Sen. Glenn Grothman, R-West Bend, received quite a bit of flack for the legislation he introduced last week condemning single parenthood. The discussion surrounding Grothman’s bill, SB 507, has focused on his idea that single parents are unqualified to raise children and are more likely to abuse them. However, much of the criticism overlooks what the bill is actually promoting rather than bringing down. SB 507 is not just an attack on single parents. This ideologically based attack extends far and wide in its scope.
Mining bill could have been good for Wisconsin jobs
By Ethan Safran | Mar. 14, 2012Last week, the Wisconsin state Senate failed to pass an important piece of legislation for workers. This legislation proposed a $1.5 billion iron ore mine to be built in the northern part of the state that died because Republicans failed to gather a final vote despite holding a 17-16 majority.
Support proposed ASM constitution
By The Daily Cardinal Editorial Board and Sam Marz | Mar. 13, 2012Tonight, the Associated Students of Madison will raise their hands for or against a special election centered on the approval of a new ASM constitution—a document designed to restructure the function and make-up of UW-Madison’s student government. But before this Board jumps into the nitty gritty, let us just say, while it is highly unlikely, we are crossing our fingers that student council approves.
Grothman blames child abuse on mothers
By Christine Sowinski and Kate Krebs | Mar. 12, 2012Wisconsin state Senator Glenn Grothman,R-West Bend, has declared that unplanned and nonmarital pregnancies are chosen by women, who must be taught that such untimely childbearing is a mistake. This view is similar to the recently introduced Senate Bill 507, which labels single mothers as a cause of child abuse. The bill asks the government to brainwash the nation into believing the only correct parenting method consists of a married couple, excluding same-sex partners. Grothman continues to support the obvious attack on nonmarital childrearing, even though he is fully aware that 31 percent of Wisconsin children live in single-parent homes. He even admitted that his message is “politically incorrect” at a public hearing about the bill.
