Community gathers to pray and heal following Pittsburgh attack

The voices that chanted the Mourner’s Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for those who grieve, were heavy with pain Sunday night when nearly 1,000 gathered at the First Unitarian Society for an interfaith service honoring the 11 killed and six wounded in Saturday morning’s attack on The Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.


Diversity Forum speakers include the assistant vice provost in the Division of Diversity Sherri A. Charleston, the chief of university police Kristen Roman and Chancellor Rebecca Blank.

UW-Madison will welcome a variety of guest speakers to discuss topics of inclusivity and wellness at the 18th Diversity Forum next week. Program directors, police officers, professors and others affiliated with UW-Madison will gather at Union South on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

Study sheds light on sextortion, fastest-growing form of teen cyberbullying

Sexual extortion, or “sextortion,” occurs when a victim who voluntarily shares sexual images finds themself threatened with the release of those materials unless they meet the blackmailer’s demands — many of which are sexual. The U.S. Federal Justice department identified sextortion as the fastest growing form of online bullying among children and teens.

Madison Metro bus crashes into police station

A Madison Metro bus plowed into a police station Tuesday afternoon after the driver suffered a medical emergency. The bus veered off the road and crashed into a brick wall housing trash cans outside the Madison Police Department’s North District Building just blocks from the airport. Police said the accident was likely caused by a medical emergency on the part of the driver, who was taken to the hospital.

Student Unions now offer emergency contraceptives

An oral emergency contraceptive is now available for purchase in both student unions at UW-Madison, and at a lower cost than name-brand equivalents. EContra EZ, an emergency contraceptive pill, can now be purchased at the Badger Markets in Memorial Union and Union South for $13.
