“Annihilation” is a melting pot. It’s quite difficult to compare it to a singular film that might capture its mood and personality. It carries the same cerebral, ominous tones that were signature traits in director Alex Garland’s previous hit, “Ex Machina,” and now bleeds into the increasingly horrific expedition via our protagonist crew.

If there’s one celebrity who I could become best friends with, it would be Mindy Kaling. “The Mindy Project” was one of my favorite rom-coms, and when it ended, I was horrified I would no longer have a weekly hangout with Mindy — so I mostly just stalked her Instagram. Luckily, she wasn’t gone for too long, as she premiered her new show “Champions” earlier this month on NBC. Though it’s not the greatest, any Mindy is better than no Mindy.

Superheroes don’t always wear capes, or so the saying goes. Sometimes they blend into the black backdrop on a stage and cast their powers over a crowd through the vibrations of their guitar strings. Indie rock singer-songwriter Mitski radiated this power, her chin raised and legs placed firmly in a powerful stance, regal as she watched over her kingdom at the High Noon Saloon this past Thursday.

Ivet Castelo Torres, Catalan indie film co-director and co-producer of the upcoming film, “Ojos Negros,” sat down with me last month for an interview. Over some classic paella and a glass of wine, she discussed the movie’s plot and intricacies of shooting in Spain, as well as some of the unique properties of pursuing an education in filmography.

On Thursday night, Ali Siddiq performed his first show of five at Madison’s Comedy Club on State.

A lot of comedians grow up and experience many things, from hardships to joy. For Ali Siddiq, this was no different. His life is an odyssey which began in the projects of Houston, Texas, where he currently lives in a gated community.

Anders Holm, Adam DeVine and Blake Anderson have been through a lot together, from initially meeting in California to creating the hit Comedy Central show, “Workaholics.” The three of them stopped by Vilas Hall’s Parliamentary room last Friday to promote their newest project: the Netflix movie “Game Over, Man!”

Fans of “Rick and Morty,” myself included, may not have expected the duo to return Logic’s favor of a brief cameo, as he did last season on the popular show. The grandfather-grandson duo announced last week that Logic was dropping a sequel to his well-received Bobby Tarantino mixtape that would be “Good ol’ Atlanta-style club rap.”

Jordan Tannenbaum has been a fan of video games since the day his parents got him a Game Boy in kindergarten. During middle school, he and a group of friends played “Super Smash Bros.,” a series of fighting games starring Nintendo’s favorite characters.

Tory Lanez, an outspoken rapper and singer hailing from Toronto, released his second full-length album earlier this month with MEMORIES DON’T DIE.

Listeners of Black Panther: The Album may recall “Paramedic!” as one of the record’s highlights. It starred a vibrant and enthusiastic rap group out of Vallejo, Calif., who made a noticeable buzz for all the right reasons.

Lorde kicked off her “Melodrama” North American tour in Milwaukee earlier this month with Tove Styrke and Run the Jewels. After suffering through two hours of dreadful, mediocre opening acts, the crowd was getting restless.

In my opinion, “UnReal” is one of TV’s hidden gems. It was perhaps the first show that brought serious attention to Lifetime, as the network was formerly known to air cheesy, made-for-TV movies or “Dance Moms.” “UnReal” follows two female producers, Quinn and Rachel, of a “The Bachelor” parody program called “Everlasting.” They manipulate the contestants of the show, as well as their co-workers, for the sake of good ratings. We’ve found these two ladies back at it for the season three premiere, letting us know their reign is still strong.

Declan McKenna first caught the world’s attention, and my own, for his 2015 hit, “Brazil.” The song was written in protest of the worldwide soccer organization, FIFA, and their awarding of the 2014 FIFA World Cup to Brazil. This required the country to build new stadiums — which cost millions of dollars — despite many Brazilians living in poverty.

Expectations were high as I waited outside of the Orpheum Theater last Wednesday, excited to see what Mat Kearney would perform for his stop in Madison. His last album, Just Kids came out in 2015 and his last well-known hit, “Ships in the Night” dropped nearly eight years ago. I was curious to see what Kearney’s performance would unveil and I was pleasantly surprised — though he has new music, the same relaxed and upbeat songs were still there.

Keys N Krates stole the stage last Wednesday, March 7, at the Majestic with their classic trap bass and beats. The Canadian trio consisting of Greg Dawson, Adam Tune and David Matisse are on tour for their recent album, CURA. Though most electronic shows consist of a producer behind a laptop, Keys N Krates introduced a unique element of live performance throughout their set.

Judah & The Lion brought energy and positivity to the Orpheum last Tuesday night, but the openers were truly what made the performance memorable.

As the most baffling game in the most baffling series ever made, “Metal Gear Survive” has reasonable claim to the title of “Weirdest Game Ever.” But break down the forces behind its creation, and it suddenly becomes one of the most sensical, cynical business decisions made in the video game industry.

2018 has been Donald Glover’s year. Or maybe it’s been our year since we get to enjoy Donald Glover? In any case, whether it’s winning a Grammy in January or landing the role of Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo prequel, Glover has been on fire.

“Get Out” proves it is possible to combine sharp humor with genuine terror. Jordan Peele created a horror movie that attracts a variety of audiences, but he was looking to do more than just provide entertainment. His Oscar-winning screenplay also offers a deep-seeded social critique on modern-day racism, and it is already a classic.
