Diversity is too often drowned by tides of blacks and whites. There are so many forces telling us to think one thing or its polar opposite, and as a result, we are led to believe that our values are not worthy of recognition if they are not painted black or white. This is an ongoing struggle, especially here in Madison, given recent events on campus. However, in attending SXSW in Austin, Texas, I found the keynotes and film screenings to be a refreshing blend of perspectives and stories that challenged these boundaries. The diversity in topic and genre kept me on my toes as the festival proved over and over that the best projects are the ones that add color to these dichromatic topics.

“The Mojo and The Sayso,” written by Aishah Rahman and directed by Jessica Lanius, is a captivating play about love and loss. This play follows a mourning family whose son is shot by a local police officer. This story about police brutality does an amazing job at exploring how this kind of state of violence affects people personally. Many people don’t know how it feels to lose a child to this kind of violence, but this play gives us a safe space to cry, heal and relate to this family. When asked about the significance of the title, Jessica Lanius explained,

Many know Kid Cudi for his solo rap career. But some are unaware of the other talents that he’s recently exploring. Cudi has been busier than ever since his last trip to Madison in 2013. When he first came to perform, there was a lot of hype coming from his breakout on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label. Cudi had released Man On The Moon: The End of Day under this label, and went on to release Man On The Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager under Kanye’s label as well. Both albums had received the nation’s eyes and boosted his following dramatically. Though the breakout actually came after the release of his third studio album Indicud, this is where he began to transcend and thrive more on his own in a creative way. He looked for more than that of following just what pop culture wanted. So when he arrived in Madison at the Alliant Energy Center on Sept. 9, 2013 it was a big moment. The concert featured an up-and-coming rapper known as Logic, and the well-known rap collective Odd Future.
