By now most of you have heard about the party on North Brooks
Street that was busted by the police and received thousands of
dollars in fines. For those of you who haven't here is a little
background:

Although they disagree on issues from health care to job creation,
both gubernatorial candidates found common ground today when they
pledged to the Transportation Development Association they would
not raid their funds for other projects.

It is not too often that I actually drive my car around campus or
even drive my car in general. Most of the time it serves as a
resting place for leaves or something for snow to bury. It's just
another thing I inadvertently waste my money on. In high school I
actually got my driving privileges revoked due to the fact that I
totaled two cars in one year, racked up the occasional speeding
ticket and may or may not have caused some fender-benders. And yes,
in the best stern Dad voice I can imitate, it is a ""privilege to
operate a vehicle, not a right."" You would think after five years,
two speeding tickets and three cars, I would trust myself to drive,
but I don't entirely do yet, nor should anyone else.

With the November elections approaching, closely fought races at
every level of Wisconsin politics are heating up. The majority of
political debate has centered on job creation in light of
Wisconsin's 8.1 percent unemployment rate, and the race for
governor is proving no exception. Republican candidate Scott Walker
and Democrat Tom Barrett have centered their campaigns on
increasing employment as a means to improving the economy. Their
plans for doing so, however, are far different.

This summer has been full of controversial pieces of legislation,
on both national and local levels. Perhaps the most controversial
law passed was the Arizona immigration law. The law would give
Arizona state law enforcement the right to enforce Federal
immigration laws, and in some cases check for immigration status.
Immigration is such a hot-button issue because it is important to
everyone in America, even Wisconsinites.

This just in—people drink a lot in Wisconsin. Over the last few
months, the State Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse has been
examining ways to change Wisconsin's alcohol-based culture. This
shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, especially college students
in Madison. Although not all students on campus come from small
Wisconsin towns that rely solely on alcohol for weekend
entertainment, most of us drank before coming to school and were
more than ready to continue the habit once we arrived in Madison,
Wisconsin.

As an incoming freshman or transfer student, the new
surroundings of UW-Madison and the city surrounding it can be a tad
intimidating, if only because they're new. Every day you'll see a
rash of names of the front page of the paper of various government
officials, university administrators and other notable figures and
organizations, but it takes some time to understand who they all
are and what it is they do. To make things easier, The Daily
Cardinal has created a cheat sheet covering most of news makers you
will see throughout the pages of our paper in the coming year.

We like, we like to party. Scratch that, Vengaboys, we here in
Madison love to party. To be exact, we love a nonstop party, the
kind whose fun is not hampered and cut short by the men in blue.
Noise complaints from angry neighbors often alert the police of
said nonstop joy that occurs at our parties, creating a mess of
tickets and fines that make the fiesta almost not worthwhile.
Almost.
