It’s a rare occasion that I’m left speechless at the theater, but the production of “Mary Poppins” currently showing at the Overture Center completely blew me away. This show follows the classic story, originally written as childrens’ books by P.L. Travers, about a whimsical British nanny put in charge of two troublesome children, George and Jane Banks.

Every once in a while, an incident comes along that perfectly clarifies the state of our political discourse. Last week, Sen. Rand Paul’s, R-Kentucky, 13-hour filibuster did exactly that. Anyone even remotely concerned with civil liberties, checks and balances and due process of law should have cheered Paul’s filibuster for seeking explicit limits on the use of drones against American citizens on American soil. Indeed, Paul’s discussion, while welcome, did not go remotely far enough in scope.

Buddha is an optimist. He sees life as flowery when it isn’t, and there is something to be said about this outlook on life. To see if the benefits were worth it, I vowed to find out while riding the 80. This is my first tale of braving the world as someone I’m not: an optimist.

For shows awaiting a new season order, finales take on both an optimistic and ominous tone for viewers. This is particularly true in first seasons when creators throw everything but the kitchen sink used to prepare kinky breakfasts at the wall in hopes of acquiring an audience loyal enough to tune in week after week.

I decided to watch the Oscars Sunday and thought they started at 7 rather than 7:30 p.m. This was a brutal mistake, as I was subjected to catch most of the Red Carpet show, which made me want to tear my eyeballs out. I guess the consensus was that Jennifer Lawrence was the best dressed. That’s the same Jennifer Lawrence who later tripped over her mountain of a dress and faceplanted on the steps when she accepted her Best Actress award, perfectly illustrating the absurdity of the Red Carpet show. If I’m ever invited to the Oscars, I’m going to show up in a T-shirt and jeans just to lampoon the Red Carpet show. And then when the TV host asks me, “Who are you wearing? Dior? Armani?” I’d be all like, “The hell if I know. Probably some 10-year-old kid from a sweatshop in Indonesia.”

Not every registered student organization seeks funding from the Associated Students of Madison. If I were to list every group that did not receive funding from ASM the list would be incredibly long because it would include all the groups who did not apply for any of the Operations, Event or Travel grants that Finance Committee allocates as well as those denied funding, which is miniscule compared to the amount not requesting. There are over 800 RSOs on campus and many seek funding in other ways. As to why we are running out of Event Grant funds for the academic/fiscal year, it’s because we have nearly allocated all of it. We have had an exceptionally large number of grants this year because of certain changes outside our control. The MultiCultural Council changed its funding stream to limit how much it can grant to organizations. ASM Finance Committee changed its policies to help more groups access funding this past year and will continue to do it at the end of this academic year. Also, due to the construction of the new Union Theater, many groups who use this venue events had to contract with other, more expensive venues, including the Overture Center, which has refused to offer cheaper rates.

In the wake of “Mad Men’s” critical success, period pieces on TV became en vogue faster than Don Draper could throw down a bottle of scotch. This wave is fairly ironic considering the paltry but devoted viewership “Mad Men” garners.

Let’s tackle a big subject today, one that’s pervasive and pertinent to the way we experience music, yet elusive when we try to pin down its true influence. I’m talking about how the Internet, in all its manifestations, plays a role in music consumption.
