Great music allows a collection of strings twanging, drums
beating and bells shaking to be a medium through which the listener
can bond with the performer. ""Crazy Heart"" attempts to give the
complete picture of where soulful, personal music originates
from—in this case, the hard-lived life of a country legend.

The official website of Beach House, the four-year-old,
two-person ""dream-pop"" duo, brings you to a single image of the
two acting like a pair of misfit, ironically swanky teens. You
can't see their faces. There is a sculpture of a head with multiple
faces in between them, and Victoria Legrand's hand is tucked into
her pants next to her belt buckle, where ""GIT SUM!"" has been
MSPainted in. To boot, the three links on the page—aside from those
accessing a new Teen Dream single—are miniscule and
hidden. As a whole, this is uncannily indicative of the unabashed
timidity and awkward social remoteness Beach House purvey through
their music.

In the two years leading up to the release of
Transference—Spoon's seventh studio album—Spoon has been
faced with the lofty task of following up their own perfection.
Their previous release, 2007's formidable Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga,
was about as conclusive a punctuation mark as it gets, the
full-bodied conclusion to the skeletal sketches they'd slowly
perfected throughout the preceding 13 years. If there was any room
for improvement left in their airtight creases or minimalist
instrumentation, they didn't show it.

The election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts Tuesday night sent
tremors through the political world. A wake up call was sent to the
Washington establishment that Americans were, at the very least,
concerned about the direction the country was heading. A Republican
was able to pull off the unthinkable by taking on the Massachusetts
Democratic machine and turning a seat that was once held by none
other than Ted Kennedy into a seat that sustained the filibuster
and blocked any hope of health-care reform. In a state where
Democrats enjoy a three-to-one advantage in terms of voter
registration, how could such a high profile Democrat lose when so
much was on the line?

Lots of NoDoz, and plenty of Dew."" That's how I respond when my
close friends ask me how I ever got through U.S. Operative basic
training without my superiors catching wind of my debilitating
disorder. I'm agent Peter Stotch, and I have narcolepsy. Sometimes
I'll go all day without falling asleep. Other times I'll find
myself curled up like a kitten in the middle of the street.
Regardless, I'm the best there is at what I do, and I'll be damned
if the occasional mid-day snooze is gonna keep me from my work.

As my final year at UW-Madison winds to a slow and painful
close, I can't help but look back upon some of the more memorable
moments of my time here. Sure, the football Saturdays, the sunsets
at Memorial Union and the nights when I called my ex-girlfriend
Sherry upwards of 76 times rank up there in my memories, but
somehow many classroom stories still stick out in my memory. We are
lucky enough to have some of the most unique and influential
professors at UW-Madison, and some of my most defining moments came
at the hands of their lessons, no matter how serious or silly. As a
sort of written tribute, I thought I'd share some of my most
favorite teaching moments from my time in Madison.

Von Trier's track record of coaxing intense
performances from his actresses—such as Emily Watson, Bjork and
Nicole Kidman—is justly revered. This makes the charge of misogyny
that von Trier often receives all the more curious. The philosophy
expounded in ""Antichrist"" is relatively unambiguous but by no
means straightforward: Woman causes Man's fall, but Woman is also
Man's salvation. ""Antichrist"" never quite reconciles this
dialectic, and perhaps a feminist film scholar will someday
interpret the movie so as to prove that von Trier literally
believes the ideas advanced by Gainsbourg's character regarding the
essential evil of women. For now, it's enough to praise von Trier
for making a profoundly problematic film; however, we should also
let him know that alienation is most effective when it wakes the
viewer up, not when it distracts her from the real meat of the
work.

Of all the stressful activities I experience in a day—writing
last-minute essays, deciding what to do after college/where to do
it/how to do it/if I can do it—one of the greatest stresses occurs
early in the morning. Around 10:15 a.m. after I wake up, take a
good shower, and consider joining the rest of civilized society by
getting dressed, I pick out my underwear.

When most of the musical world became acquainted with Arcade
Fire via their 2004 debut Funeral, there was no trend or
gimmickry by which someone could easily characterize the band; they
weren't wearing futuristic costumes, rehashing '60s rock 'n' roll,
or auto-tuning their vocals. All anyone could talk about was how
fucking good the album was—like, astonishingly, breathtakingly
good, and even more-so because just a month earlier, almost no one
had heard of the band.

The past decade witnessed a mass withdrawal of humanity. The
more technology expanded, the more Man contracted. Online
networking exploded, but more houses locked their doors. Over the
past ten years, no band has encapsulated this phenomenon better
than the Walkmen. They pushed their sound to the limit, filling
every void with distortion and leaving no moment untouched, but
they sang with crippling reservations and loneliness. Perhaps their
spirit is captured best on Bows + Arrows' standout track
""The Rat"" when singer Hamilton Leithauser reflects, ""When I used
to go out I would know everyone that I saw / Now I go out alone if
I go out at all.""

Most college students who survived Freakfest this year in
Madison are lucky enough to say that they have since recovered
completely from the night's horrific mistakes and binges within one
to two days. However, for 22-year-old Will Rollins, the luxury of
leading a normal life has not been even a slight possibility for
over two weeks. Well into November, Rollins is still hungover from
Halloween, and not even the hottest shower can wash off the stains
of his decisions from that night.

As the two big T's—turkey and tests—approach, a sense of chaos
starts to creep into our lives. We come to the realization that (1)
the semester ends in four weeks, (2) most of us haven't read the

WANT A FREAKING BREAK, THAT IS ALL WE ASK, OH MY GOSH COME ON
ALREADY!!!!
