The drums are starting to beat.
There’s a negative, knee-jerk reaction to country in certain circles of musical fandom. You know the one; the glib response of “I listen to everything but country and rap” immediately comes to mind. I can’t help but think it’s a gracious mix of regionalism and sour elitism—the term conjures images of overalls-wearing, beer-guzzling, sister-kissing bumpkins from the Deep South, crooning sultry ballads to their tractors. We refined city folk, we have more serious interests, like “House of Cards” and, I don’t know, The Wall Street Journal.
Traevon Jackson has been a controversial player for the Badgers (6-5 Big Ten, 19-5 overall). He’s known as “Mr. Clutch” for making multiple game-winners, but also as a player who makes multiple mistakes that can cost his team. Badger fans saw both sides of that today, and it was infuriating at first, but was then followed by exhilaration.
With the Golden Globes and Grammys buzz coming to an end and the Oscar's just around the corner, celebrities are preparing to look their best and hopefully receive a prestigious award. No, I do not mean an Oscar--l mean best dressed. There have been many “hits” and “misses” on the red carpet this season. Whether the celebrity is thin, rocking a baby bump for the next nine months or anywhere in between, they are here and dressed to impress.
This is Laura Jane Grace’s first Against Me! album as her new self. In turn, Transgender Dysphoria Blues feels less like a rebirth of the more-than-a-decade-old alternative/punk band, and more of a statement to fans that Against Me! is still the rebellious and vocal punk band of their early years. The only difference is frontwoman Laura Grace has found a new identity and would like to share how it affected her growing up in Gainesville, Florida.
The world lost one of its truly inspiring leaders and visionaries December 5 in South African President Nelson Mandela, at the age of 95. Mandela’s story is, by no exaggeration, an amazing one. The white South African government’s policy of apartheid was a hideous example of racial discrimination and segregation. Because of his fight against apartheid, Mandela served a 27-year prison sentence. Mandela was able to overcome all of this and bring about the end of apartheid and in 1994 became South Africa’s first truly democratically elected president. But as we say goodbye to this legendary man, South Africa is far from racially equal “rainbow nation” that Mandela dreamed it would be.

Have you ever had a concussion or any other head-related injury resulting in a permanent or temporary change in cognition? Concussions and other Traumatic Brain Injuries are one of the most serious public health problems in the United States. TBIs occur when a force to the head causes the brain to strike the inside of the skull resulting in swelling and sometimes even bleeding in the brain. These injuries are extremely common in falls, car accidents and many sports-related injuries.
Eminem’s newly released Marshall Mathers LP2 is by no means a sequel to the Marshall Mathers LP he released in 2000. Rather, it is a welcome contrast that’s darkly autobiographical, violent and full of clever witticisms; in a nutshell, what Eminem does best.
In their first game at the Big Ten Tournament, Northwestern (2-4-1 Big Ten, 10-6-3 overall) defeated Wisconsin (4-3-0, 13-4-2) 2-1.
There’s an old Japanese saying that translates roughly to: “Mario Kart Double Dash!!’ is the eighth wonder of the world.” I can’t attribute that prophetic claim to anyone specifically, but I’m assuming it was some revered Shogun. The phrase’s meaning is beyond dispute however; “Double Dash!!” will forever rule the “Mario Kart” roost.
Thank you, for the stunning example of how rape culture is alive and well on the UW-Madison campus. There are several aspects of the recent Letter to the Editor that Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment (PAVE) feels warrant response.
After a stunning loss to unranked Illinois on Sunday, the Badgers are looking to kick off the second half of the Big Ten season with a bang.
Moonface’s Julia With Blue Jeans On is the kind of album you listen to once and never forget. It unapologetically commands full attention and respect, and refuses to back down throughout the last chord. This album is heavy. I mean weight-of-the-world-on-your-shoulders heavy. I mean agonizingly heavy. I mean “it should be impossible for one person and a piano to create this kind of heaviness” heavy. Apathetic and wise, Julia With Blue Jeans On composes exactly the type of atmosphere for the lost, lonely and misunderstood.
During the Wisconsin volleyball team’s recent home stand the Badgers beat two top-10 teams in a row for the first time in program history, knocking down then-No. 5 Michigan State Sunday and No. 7 Minnesota Wednesday. While their match against Illinois (4-5 Big Ten, 8-11 overall) won’t feature another top foe, the Badgers still look to play at a high level.
To the eyes of the international community, it was nothing less than a Russian diplomatic coup. I am talking, of course, about negotiations between the United States and Russia over the fate of Syrian chemical weapons that took place last month in Geneva. In a situation that appeared to be inevitably spiraling towards United States’ intervention, the efforts of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his long trusted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have quietly stunned U.S. diplomats in their pragmatism and tact. The deal, which would allow United Nations weapons inspectors into Syria and create a realistic timeline to destroy all chemical weapons stockpiles, was welcomed by Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry remained skeptical about Syrian compliance, and warned that any faltering in the agreement on the side of Syria could result in U.S. military action.
Brandy Clark is mostly known for songwriting. Artists such as Darius Rucker, LeAnn Rimes, Reba McEntire and many other famous country performers have used her songs. And she stuns in her new album 12 Stories. She has two songs this year on top country charts, “Better Dig Two” by The Band Perry and “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert. In this album, she steps out of the shadows and shines.
Delays are a touchy subject among video game players. Drawing on Internet ire seemingly from the fiery pits of hell, some players vent their unbridled frustration on the friendly confines of NeoGAF.com. Others take a more rational approach, believing extra time should make better product.
