Red carpet trends of 2014

With the Golden Globes and Grammys buzz coming to an end and the Oscar's just around the corner, celebrities are preparing to look their best and hopefully receive a prestigious award. No, I do not mean an Oscar--l mean best dressed. There have been many “hits” and “misses” on the red carpet this season. Whether the celebrity is thin, rocking a baby bump for the next nine months or anywhere in between, they are here and dressed to impress.

One of the hottest trends this season is metallic. Taylor Swift attended the Grammys in a stunning Gucci short-sleeved column dress, and joked that “it's bulletproof” because of the amount of metal on it. This jaw dropping gunmetal gown made Taylor look even taller than she already is in head-to-toe metallic. Even Ciara rocked this trend as her Emilio Pucci copper gown fell over her baby bump. In this long-sleeved gown, a pattern of shimmering copper beading fell perfectly along Ciara's body. These shimmering divas showed off their incredible figures as the camera flashes reflected off of their dresses. P!nk took metallic to a new level and donned a shimmering scarlet dress. This Johanna Johnson dress was stunning in a simple but elegant way that still allowed P!nk to stand out on the red carpet. Johanna Johnson also did wonders for Chrissy Teigen (John Legend's wife) as she showed off her curves with a midriff-showing, lacy black gown. This gown was everything a celebrity should wear when attending an award show. With a high “Angelina Jolie-style” slit up the leg, Chrissy looked like a walking Oscar.

On the mens' side of things, Pharrell Williams sported a brown hat. Many questioned what he was hiding under the hat because it was so large. He received mixed opinions about it, as it seemed a little“Ranger Joe.” To add to this outfit, Pharrell wore a red track jacket, a plain white T-shirt and jeans. In other words, Pharrell Williams needs to either amp up his style, or at least leave the hat at home next time.

A hat is a difficult accessory to wear at award shows, especially as a woman, unless you're Madonna of course. Madonna looked as chic as ever in her Ralph Lauren pantsuit. Matching with her 8-year-old son David, Madonna was stunning in her suit, hat and Michael Jackson-style sparkly gloves. Katy Perry wore one of the more controversial dresses of the evening. Many people, including E's Fashion Police, thought that Katy "took the theme too far" styling a Valentino light-pink gown. This ballroom shape gown had music notes detailed on the fabric from the waist down. While some people thought the tulle skirt was a stunner, others thought it was more of a costume dress.

A few weeks prior, at the Golden Globes, many men and women showed up dressed to impress as well. Sophia Vergara was one of the biggest hits of the night in a solid black Zac Posen ball gown and an exquisite turquoise Lorraine Schwartz collar necklace. Her spectacular figure was shaped perfectly by this gown. Likewise, new actress Lupita Nyong'o wore a scarlet straight gown with an attached cape. Stylists were in awe at this fantastic style choice for her first time on the red carpet. No one expected such a bold choice, and many agreed that few could have worn it as well as Lupita did.

Kerry Washington stunned in a white Balenciaga gown with a mock vest attached that opened right over her baby bump. As one of the most watched television actresses right now in her hit show “Scandal,” all eyes were on Kerry. Unfortunately, not all actresses can cater to their bump as well as Ciara and Kerry Washington did. Drew Barrymore wore a Monique Lhuillier dress that looked like she was wearing a Valentine's Day card. This light pink dress had magenta and red fabric attached that looked like pieces of heart confetti, not to mention that incorporated a train as well. We've seen Barrymore dress stunningly, so we know she can do better.

With both hits and misses this season thus far on the red carpet, we look forward to seeing what celebrities have in store for us throughout the rest of the season. Some of the biggest events have yet to occur. We can only hope that they all look stunning and choose trendy dresses that fit their bodies well.
