It looked as though the Wisconsin women’s hockey team (5-2) wasn’t too happy about surrendering their No. 1 ranking to their westward neighbors as the Badgers made a statement with a 5-0 beatdown of the top-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-2) on Friday.

You could say that No. 12 Michigan State (0-2 Big Ten, 6-2 overall) got lampooned on national television. You could say that the ninth-ranked Badgers (2-0 Big Ten, 8-1 overall) would not be going Home Alone without a win in their pocket. You could say that the Badgers seniors delivered like some Christmas Mail (yes, that’s a real movie). The calendar has turned to December, and we still know shockingly little about the No. 16 Wisconsin Badgers (2-1). The team has played just three games, each one telling a vastly different narrative about the state of the program.

Two games into the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers’ (2-0) abbreviated 2020 season, much of the talk has been about quarterback Graham Mertz, and rightfully so. The freshman quarterback followed his stellar debut against Illinois with another efficient, turnover-free performance at Michigan, the team’s second blowout victory in as many outings.

Food pantries around the globe have seen an uptick in food insecurity as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, and the UW-Madison campus is no exception. Coming into Friday night’s game against Michigan (1-3), there were a litany of questions surrounding the No. 10 Wisconsin (2-0) football program. Nobody knew about quarterback Graham Mertz’s status, who would miss the game due to COVID-19, or how the team would respond after missing two consecutive weeks of practice. Expectations were high, but some rust was certainly expected.

As the rest of the world lies in waiting for Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” I’ve shifted my attention towards another blockbuster coming down the post-COVID pipeline in the next 12-15 months — a familiar figure of comic book lore Nolan himself has successfully and notably tackled before.

UW-Madison freshman Alex O’Johnson has made waves in recent days for his heroic display at a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, to be held in 2021. In front of a grand audience of two cameras and a cat, he smashed the Olympic record for discus throwing, reaching 88 meters — or as normal people would say, 288.714 feet — in his very first attempt. Seeing such a stellar first throw, the remaining participant decided to walk away, handing O’Johnson an easy peasy lemon squeezy victory.
