Every few years, students at the University of Wisconsin have an
opportunity to be the deciding factor in local, state and national
elections for public office. UW has long been a hotbed of political
involvement and history reveals the dramatic difference we, as
young people, generate when engaged in critical public issues and
political campaigns. This year is no exception. Upcoming elections
in November for Governor, House and Senate will surely shape our
state and nation for decades. But UW students have an opportunity
to flex our collective political muscles before November by voting
in state-primary elections this Tuesday, Sept. 14.

I remember my first Badger game quite well — on Aug. 30, 2008,
the Badgers took the field at Camp Randall Stadium and trounced
Akron 38-17 while I watched from section P in the north end zone.
Obviously, I knew every single cheer, belted out the lyrics to all
of the songs the PA system played, had every student section chants
memorized and flawlessly executed the Time Warp dance during the
Fifth Quarter.

The exodus of talent from the Badgers' national runner-up team
just keeps on going.

As graduation draws closer—terrifyingly close—and my departure
from Wisconsin becomes more imminent, my yearlong effort to grow up
and become a full-fledged, responsible adult becomes less about
choice and more about necessity. Over the weekend, I decided the
time had come to make a big step into adulthood: the purchase of a
new car.

Prospective tavern owners will no longer face a one-year waiting
period before they can sell liquor and beer downtown if they are
replacing a business that used to sell alcohol.

Today marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The daylong

Gaylord Nelson, after whom our Institute for Environmental Studies

Ahhh, the signs of spring. Birds chirping, warm weather
returning and, of course, the high-pitched, reverberating metallic
ping of an aluminum bat colliding with the leather husk of a
baseball.

After spending most of the day in partisan caucus Tuesday, the
state Assembly rushed to pass multiple bills early Wednesday
morning before the legislative session comes to an end later this
week.

Last week, the state assembly passed a bill banning the release
of 911 call recordings. If it goes on to gain the Senate's
approval, Wisconsin could become the fifth state exempting audio of
911 tapes from the public records, following Missouri,
Pennsylvania, Wyoming, and Rhode Island. Even though the new
measure is backed by families of the victims, who are the most
relevant party in cases of emergency, public rights to access these
records should not be abridged.

Wisconsin's 2010 U.S. Senate race is shaping up to be nearly as interesting as a Minnesotan election. Last Friday, Dick Leinenkugel––yes, one of those Leinenkugels––suddenly resigned his post as Wisconsin's Commerce Secretary to announce he will run for Senate. The Menomonee Falls native is part of the fifth generation of the Leinenkugel Brewing company, and since 2008, oversaw Wisconsin's economic development policy.

Wisconsin entered this year's NCAA Tournament having played six
of the 15 other teams in the hunt for a national title. As the
Badgers get ready for the Frozen Four this weekend in Detroit,
however, the three teams standing between them an a national
championship are unfamiliar to Wisconsin. Here is a look at the
other three teams that will face off at Ford Field Thursday.

Like Stephen Colbert's coverage of obscure stories, I enjoy
bringing under-discussed issues to light. In that respect, as
students we should be particularly intrigued by the potential
addition of student loan amendments to the fast-tracked health care
bill.
