When children start orchestra programs during fifth grade in Madison area public schools, demographics usually match those of the classrooms. However, by the time students are playing in high school, diversity in music programs is nearly nonexistent.

When I landed in Los Angeles, people asked me why I came to the United States. I would tell them I came here to study, after which they would grow excited and proceed to ask me where I was studying. When I replied with UW-Madison, every person’s reaction was the same: They all looked at me, sometimes in fear, sometimes jokingly, and asked, “You know it is cold there, don’t you?” Of course I did. I had put some serious research into my study abroad program, and though my arrival in the great U.S. of A. in the middle of winter could be construed as crazy, I had chosen to test my limits in the freezing cold Wisconsin.

When the sun comes out prematurely, and it is 50-plus degrees for multiple days in a row, Madison’s citizens undergo a change. Rising out of their winter parkas and crew neck sweatshirts, people from all corners of campus venture over to the Memorial Union Terrace to soak in the sun’s rays.

How many girls can say they have had a man dressed in neon spandex, sporting a beard of snot and sweat icicles give them a big, cold kiss on the cheek? Not many, that is for sure, but I sure can. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything (Well, that is a lie, but I was going for emotional impact).

INDIANAPOLIS—There is an old adage in basketball about how difficult it is to beat a team three times in a season. No. 8 Michigan State made it clear that adage wasn’t going to apply to them as they rolled to a 65-52 defeat of No. 14 Wisconsin in Saturday’s Big Ten semifinals.

I started my senior year with two goals I hoped to accomplish by
the end of the 30 weeks: graduate and return to the weight I first
walked through Witte’s doors at. Like most college students, I have
gained some poundage over the years, approximately 10 pounds. And
while I have enjoyed every last bottle of Spotted Cow and every
single loaf of spicy cheesy bread, I felt my final year of college
was the time to make a change, if in no other form than light
beer.

Over the past two of years, I have begun to take notice of a
couple intriguing developments. One, the essentiality of having
baby carrots and hummus on hand at all times, and two, my mother
and I are two peas in a pod.

On this day of romantic gestures that sweep you off your feet
and carry you off to a world where Etta James' "At Last" is the
theme song and pink cherry blossoms gently fall from the trees
(those of you familiar with "Pleasantville" know what's up), you
simply cannot go wrong with Italian cuisine. Now, not just any old
run-of-the-mill Italian restaurant will do on Valentine's Day,
particularly if you are hoping to get frisky later in the evening.
Enter Francesca Al Lago's located at 111 Martin Luther King Jr.
Blvd., right between the capitol and Lake Monona. The soft
lighting, intimate table setting and portraits of Italian villas
creates the perfect atmosphere for a romantic evening with that
special someone. The menu, which changes biweekly, has special
Valentine's Day courses, including (but not limited to) Ravioli
Tartufati-a decadent cheese filled ravioli with garlic and parmesan
cream sauce, fresh tomatoes, and a splash of white truffle oil-and
Pizza con Proscuitto e Rucola complete with arugula, lemon, olive
oil, roasted plum tomatoes, mozzarella and prosciutto. If those
mouth-watering descriptions have not sufficiently convinced you to
take your sweetheart there this evening, keep in mind both of these
entrees are carefully crafted into heart shapes along with a number
of their Valentine's Day desserts.

With an abundance of time on my hands over winter break to mull
over frivolous thoughts, feelings and goals, I began pondering one
afternoon what my greatest fears are. Of course there are the
typical fears most people possess, myself included, such as dying
in a fiery plane crash, never figuring out what the hell I want to
do with my life, and living in a van down by the river because I
couldn’t land a steady job after four years at Madison.

There are two things, dear reader, you should know about me before embarking on this column. First, despite my best efforts, I am a coastie. I grew up in Westchester, N.Y., cherish my hooded North Face as if I gave birth to it and will never really understand Packer fans. That being said, unlike most New Yorkers who come to UW-Madison, I lived in the public dorms, never joined a sorority and prefer pants over no-pants. I have effectively separated myself from campus coastie culture and spend most of my time with good ol' Midwestern folk, don'tcha know.

I imagine being a hipster requires the most purposeful
effortlessness imaginable. A little swoosh of the bangs here (hold
on, let me grab my hairspray and bobby pins, aaand perfect), a
little toss of the scarf there (ooo but, that's not right, it
should be tucked in righhht thhhere) and a soft, old beanie sitting
just right (but not too right, because that would look like I put
it there on purpose, and I didn't!)
